Uric Acid Kidney Stones And Gout

Written By: admin - Aug• 15•12

Want to know the high uric acid foods to avoid if you have gout, and want to prevent future attacks? Here, you'll discover a list of foods to avoid, plus, a list of low uric acid foods you can eat as a gout sufferer.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HIGH URIC ACID?

In order to understand this, you need to be familiar with natural chemical compounds that all of us have in our bodies, and, that also exists in our foods. These compounds are called "purines". They are essential in the process that provides us with our protein and energy.

During this process, however, purines actually breakdown, and one of the byproducts of this reaction is uric acid in your bloodstream. Your kidneys then process and expel excess uric acid from your system via your bladder and urine.

Unfortunately, when either there is too much uric acid being produced, or, your kidneys cannot process it fast or efficiently enough, excess acid is retained in your bloodstream and circulated around your body. This excess acid can then be deposited in crystalline form in your joints (your big toes the majority of the time, but other joints as well).

Under the microscope these crystals are in the form of tiny needles which give rise to the symptoms of gout; redness, swelling, inflammation and, of course, unbelievable pain.

BUT WHY SHOULD SOME FOODS BE AVOIDED i.e. HIGH URIC ACID FOODS?

Remember above how uric acid is produced by purines, and, purines also exist in our food? Well, too much purines can lead to too much acid for your kidneys to handle and you end up with excess acid in your blood, leading to crystals in your joints and thus a gout attack!

So it's just common sense that someone suffering a gout attack, or, someone who suffers from regular gout attacks, should avoid foods that are high in purines.

And it becomes even more important when you learn that once having one gout attack, you're almost certain to have others. And frequent, regular gout attacks can lead to permanently damaged joints and kidney stones.

HIGH URIC ACID FOODS TO AVOID (HIGH PURINE FOODS)

The following are foods that are either high or very high in purines and should be avoided...

Heart, liver, kidneys, brains, sweetbreads, broth, comsomme, gravy, meat extracts, red meat, shellfish, mackerel, sardines, herring, fish roe, goose, turkey, partridge, baker's and brewer's yeast, and yeast extracts. Plus, you must avoid all alcohol, but particularly beer.

The following are foods which are moderately high in purines and should be drastically reduced, or, better still avoided altogether...

Asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, lentils, legumes, spinach, dried peas, oatmeal, and soy.

FOODS YOU CAN EAT AS PART OF A LOW URIC ACID DIET

The following are foods that can make up a sensible, relatively low purine diet...

Essential fatty acids (e.g. salmon, tuna, seeds, flaxseed, nuts etc.), complex carbohydrates (e.g. pasta, rice, cereals, green-leafy vegetables, fruit, bread -- but avoid white flour products), low-fat dairy products, foods high in vitamin C (e.g. potatoes, red cabbage, red bell peppers, oranges, tangerines, mandarins, etc.), fruit juices, and drink at least 2 liters of fresh water every day to help your kidneys flush excess uric acid from your system.

WANT TO FIND OUT MORE?

Your diet is at the heart of your recovery from high uric acid levels leading to gout. But, as with most things in life, it isn't quite as simple as that. There are many other issues for you to consider in order to relieve the symptoms of gout, and, reduce high uric acid levels in the blood. Also to prevent future gout attacks and possible joint and kidney damage.

You're in luck though. There's a uric acid gout report available online that thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program.

And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods, without resorting to expensive drugs with their horrible side effects.

So that you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage to your joints and damage to your kidneys including painful kidney stones.

If you want to get gout pain relief in 2 hours plus prevent your gout returning in the future, then go to http://gout-relief-today.blogspot.com and discover how you can quickly do both using completely natural means.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout?
Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout. This painful condition is the result of needle-like crystals of uric acid precipitating in joints and capillaries.

Elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia) can result from high intake of purine-rich foods, and/or impaired excretion by the kidneys. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. These uric acid stones are radiolucent and so do not appear on an abdominal plain x-ray or CT scan. Their presence must be diagnosed by ultrasound for this reason. Very large stones may be detected on x-ray by their displacement of the surrounding kidney tissues. Some patients with gout eventually get uric kidney stones.[citation needed]
    ================================================

What is serum or purine-rich foods? How can uric acid make crystals ?

    • ANSWER:
Serum means in the blood, it is not a food. Liquids like blood can hold a certain amount of a dissolved solid like uric acid. If there is more uric acid in the blood than it can hold, crystals of excess uric acid will form.
from wikipedia food sources of purine
Purines are found in high concentration in meat and meat products, especially internal organs such as liver and kidney. Plant based diets are generally low in purines [1].

Examples of high-purine sources include: sweetbreads, anchovies, sardines, liver, beef kidneys, brains, meat extracts (e.g., Oxo, Bovril), herring, mackerel, scallops, game meats, and gravy.

A moderate amount of purine is also contained in beef, pork, poultry, fish and seafood, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms, green peas, lentils, dried peas, beans, oatmeal, wheat bran, wheat germ, and hawthorn.

  2. QUESTION:
What can cause elevated serum uric acid?
Elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia) can result from high intake of purine-rich foods, and/or impaired excretion by the kidneys. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. What do you mean by uric acid stones are radiolucent and so do not appear on an abdominal plain x-ray or CT ? Where doo these stones take place in the human body.

    • ANSWER:
That means that these crystallized kidney stone (which is caused by elevated serum uric acid) is not likely to be seen on a general abdominal x-ray where other kind of kidney stone will.

Kidney stones are usually found in kidneys.

  3. QUESTION:
My husband has high levels of uric acid in his body. He also has loose poos. Are these connected?
He has just recovered from passing a kidney stone - second in 5 years and suffers from gout. His poos have always smelt acidic or sour. Is there a connection between excess uric acid and odd poos?

    • ANSWER:
Yes they are connected, and I will explain it to you backwards.

People with gout are at an increase risk for developing kidney stones. Gout occurs when large aggregates of urate crystals collect in joints, bones and in renal tubules.

What causes uric acid crystallization and stone formation? It is when urine pH is low.

What causes low urine pH? Chronic diarrhea and also dehydration.

      Hope this helps.

  4. QUESTION:
My URIC acid level is anywhere from 9-11 over the past 7 years. I just had the worst gout attack of all time?
Now I feel lower back pain and testicular pain with a touch of abdominal. I am wondering if it is kidney stones. I often have to force my urine, sometimes I go so much more than I have drank water in that recent time frame, all I drink is water and I have a very limited diet that strays to cheap potato chips twice a month maybe. What is causing this pain? I only take (0.6) mg of colchicine the past few days and only taking one pill a day doesnt normally cause me this much discomfort. I have the "dull tooth ache" feeling in my back with throbbing teste.

    Kidney stone or what?
God Alan, ACAI berry is on the avoids for gout.

    • ANSWER:
Sure sounds like it. You may well have uric acid stones. Most stones are calcium oxylate, but with your history, uric acid stones are a real possibility.

Ask your doctor about a CT scan to look for stones.

    • Gout: Condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of uric acid in the blood, recurring attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis), deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in and around the joints, and decreased kidney function and kidney stones. Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines, that are part of many foods we eat. The tendency to develop gout and elevated blood uric acid level (hyperuricemia) is often inherited and can be promoted by obesity, weight gain, alcohol intake, high blood pressure, abnormal kidney function, and drugs. The most reliable diagnostic test for gout is the identification of crystals in joints, body fluids and tissues.

  7. QUESTION:
Are there any side effects for taking colchicine long term? Should I change to taking allopurinol ?
I am a 50 years old male good health. Since my first gout attack, I have been taking colchicine 500 gm daily for the last 10 months, and have not had a second gout attack, except for some minor pains in the knee caps. which usually happens after a night of alcohol drinking. I drink up to half a bottle of whisky and red wine each week. My uric acid is high. I was treated for kidney stones several years back.

    • ANSWER:
The most common side effects of colchicine involve the stomach and bowel and are dose related. These include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. One of the most worrisome side effects of colchicine is that it can damage the bone marrow causing severe anemia and seriously low white blood counts, thereby increasing the risk of infections. All patients taking colchicine long-term require blood count monitoring. Colchicine can also cause hair loss, weakness, and nerve irritation.... gout is at least twice as effective at lowering uric acid levels as the standard drug allopurinol. .. . Febuxostat has a different chemical structure than colchicine.

  8. QUESTION:
Is this true? My husband's 2mm kidney stone isn't what's bothering him?
My husband has had 2 CT scans in the past 3 months both of which show a 2mm kidney stone. He he's been to the ER for the usual symptoms (lower back and flank pain, blood in urine, fever, chills) and the urologist we took him to a few days ago scoffs at him. His blood work was normal and the CT showed that there was nothing else going on. When we gave the urologist the CD of the CT scan he told us he didn't see anything that would be bothering him and he's acting like my husband is just trying to get pain meds (he never asked for them either, I asked them to give him something for the pain). When I told him that I saw the stone on the CT myself, he said, "well yes there's a tiny stone but that wouldn't be causing his symptoms". I'm so frustrated. My husband is not a big baby and what's going on with him looks exactly like what people feel with stones. One of the ER docs said sometimes a stone can move then go back into the kidney over and over and I think that's what is happening. But the urologist is acting like a 2mm isn't big enough to bother him. I'd like to hear about other people's experiences. What can I do for him? He has Lortabs for pain, which don't seem to help much. Does the lemon juice/olive oil mixture really work? Don't know what the stone is made of though, probably calcium or uric acid. He is Japanese and has a family history of stones and gout if that makes a difference. Is a 2mm stone really too small for him to feel? Please help.

    • ANSWER:
The ureter would differ in its diameter down its length and a 2mm stone may become stuck or slowly scrape down causing alot of pain.
Mine was fairly small, yet I passed out several times from the pain(and I was fine with natural, drug-free childbirth).
The stone ended up becoming stuck half way down so I tried the olive oil/lemon juice concoction which was fairly foul and drank lots of water afterwards. All that happened was that I became very bloated and didn't pass much urine. I then tried Coke(as it has caffeine-diuretic) and after drinking a few litres, I ended up passing the stone which by then had broken up into tiny sand-like pieces.

  9. QUESTION:
Sharp pains in bladder just before and while I urinate!! 5 days now! :( ?
Ok, so I played basketball for like 3 hrs in 95 degree heat on Saturday. Was pretty dehydrated after, but was okay and recovered. The next day I went to pee and the right side of my bladder had these sharp stabbing pains! It's not up near the kidneys.. it's below the belly button to the right close to the groin. It feels a somewhat better after I'm done, but still has a sharp lingering pain all the time. Then when I have to pee again (i guess as the bladder is full) the intense pain comes back! It hasn't gotten any better and is now Wednesday. Went to the doctor today and they found no blood or infection in the urine. Gave me flexoril and said it's probably a pulled muscle. By the way, I don't have any history with kidney stones but my dad has had gout and uric acid stones sometimes. Anyway, the only diet changes lately have been drinking coffee and taking Pepcid. Thanks for you help!! :D

    • ANSWER:
The might be a formation of urate crystals or some other mineral crystals in your bladder. When you were dehydrated, the kidney reabsorbed more water back into the bloodstream from tubules in the kidneys. That will result in the increase of the concentration of the urine that enter the bladder. When this concentration reaches the saturation point where the minerals cannot be dissolved anymore, crystallization happens and a tiny stone might have formed and stuck somewhere in the wall lining of the bladder. When there is more urine enter into the bladder, the pressure pushes the crystal against the wall and cause the pain you were suffering.

If you want to confirm it, you might need to go for a X-Ray. But I have to tell you if that crystal is a pure uric acid crystal, it is not visible under X-ray because it is transparent.

Here is the dilemma, if you don't drink water, more or bigger crystal might form. If you drink more water, you might feel the pain more often. Personally, I will go for drinking more water and urinate frequently, at least the chance of dissolving (melting) and flush out the crystal is higher. Otherwise, you might need to go for surgery to remove the stones.

  10. QUESTION:
    GOUT diet HELP??????
I don't have gout but I went to a follow-up with my urologist after passing a Kidney stone and my urine test came back with very high Uric acid. I was advised to cut back my protien intake and I did research and asked my doctor again who stated that a deit for Gout would be ideal. Only problem is this seems very overwhelming to me without guidance. My question is this and please be specific. I need some good reliable resources for Gout diets. Preferably, good cookbook recommendations, helpful books, menu plans, or websites? I have only found lists of foods I shouldn't eat but that doesn't help me to devise a healthy and balanced diet.

You know when Spurlock has trouble breathing and the doctor says:
    "Your EKG is normal..
    ......
These numbers are absolutley outrageous. For the first time were seeing uric acid elevated, so youre giving yourself hyperuricemia and the danger of hyperuricemia is gout, kidney stones. The results for your liver are obscene beyond anything i would've thought..."

  12. QUESTION:
I am having some health issues and my doctors can't figure it out. Any good doctors to email questions to?
I am 15 years old, male, 6 foot, 200 lbs, and over the past month or so have been experiencing excruciating pain in my flanks. At first we thought I had kidney stones, as the pain seemed to move from my kidneys to my bladder. However, we were unable to visualize any stones on CTs, MRIs, ultrasound, or X-ray. I have had multiple of each scan, and the only finding was a few flecks on the kidneys in one ultrasound. This is the second episode of this intense pain. All blood and urine tests have come back normal. A new urologist that I saw last week said that he thought this pain was being caused by fecal impaction, but a few days of laxatives and bowel movements at least twice a day have not changed the pain. The constipation he saw on an x-ray was probably caused by large doses of percocet, which is the strongest painkiller I am allowed to have (this only helps slightly).

Two weeks after the first episode of this pain, which temporarily resolved itself, I began having headaches in the temples and behind the eyes. These headaches have not stopped since then, and I have had them for over a month. These headaches were diagnosed as cluster headaches, and while it is probably not related, I have included this info in case there is a possibility that one issue is causing the other.

Two weeks into the headaches, I began feeling the flank, pain again. This pain radiates into my testicles, and increases with urination I have seen multiple urologists, a nephrologist, a neurologist, and other ER doctors. My primary has not been much help with this issue, but I have another appointment with him tomorrow. Each doctor I have seen has said that because the blood-work and urine came back fine, they can't and won't treat me.

I really need help, any conditions you can find or think of that may be causing this pain, please let me know as soon as possible. My doctors are treating the lab-work, not the symptoms. Please get back to me, this is interfering with my schoolwork, and I will not finish out the year on time already because of what is going on.

    Thank you

    P.S. just some history-
My grandfather has gout and high uric acid, but none of the tests have shown the same for me so far.

Last February, I was sick for two weeks before I was diagnosed with appendicitis and had it removed. The morning after the surgery, I was diagnosed with lymphoma in my kidneys because of lesions seen on the CT scan with contrast (They couldn't see anything on the scans without contrast later). A biopsy guided by ultrasound-on which they could not see the lesions- revealed acute tubular necrosis. They gave no explanation, and after an MRI three weeks later, I was told that whatever was going on was resolving itself, and that all lesions on one kidney were gone, and most on the other were too, but not all of them. With the last MRI, the lesions could only be seen with contrast. Again, I am not sure if this is related, but it might be. My biggest question here is: should I do another scan with contrast and risk the radiation and damage? PLEASE help me.

    • ANSWER:
      Wow! That is quite something!

To answer your biggest question - YES. The amount of radiation is minimal and the contrast material won't hurt you.

What I would do is get one doctor to coordinate all the tests and send them to the nearest Mayo Clinic Diagnostic lab. You've heard the expression Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth? If you had a coordinate to send off everything, then you would have some of the best minds to diagnose what your problem is.

I am so sorry to hear about your pain. It really absorbs your whole mind, doesn't it?

Please let me know what happens - I am truly interested.

  15. QUESTION:
    I get alot of ....?
I get yeast infections once a month after my period. I also have had alot of bladder infections, 10 in one year. My boyfriend and I are sexually active. We have both been tested for STDs and they were negative. We use condoms cause he got the yeast infections. I am scared half to death that I might have HPV. I go see my OBGYN in April, earliest appointment. I have been tested for Kidney problems, stones, bladder problems. I was diagnosed with acalculous chloecysistis and need surgery. Could that be the reason. I also have high uric acid in the blood and have gout. I am a bit overweight. I am really scared and need some insignt on why I get so many infections. Please no poking fun as I am really stressed about this. My stomach hurts lots and I get alot of gas. Heartburn just started.
needed to add that sometimes it hurts to have sex and to urinate after. I also have a numbing sensation in my vagina opening, no sores. when I pee it hurts when I am almost done.
also had to add I am only 30 with two kids and this started last year!!

    • ANSWER:
have you been tested for intersititial cystitis? IC is only tested by doing a cystoscopy with hydrositention (you are knocked out for it). To me it sounds like IC. I have IC and was undiagnosed for a while. Do you take antibiotics for the bladder issues? If so can cause yeast infection. I also suggest eating yogert to help with the yeast infections. Adds back good bacteria into the body to help balance out the excess yeast. If it is IC eat a low acid diet (no coffee, pop, juices -except pear, no spicey foods etc), try the meds (elmiron - worked for me). Also try prelief - OTC drug you take before you eat to reduce acid. Most drug stores will order it for you if they don't carry it. Ask the doctor for some pyridium to help with the pain as well

Stess can cause the stomach and gas issues. I find pop can too so I cut it out.

I have hpv. In fact 80% of people have had hpv. there are over 100 strains but only a handful can lead to cervical cancer. i wouldn't worry about it as much as you are. Most cases of HPV resolve on their own within a year or you can get cryo surgery (burn it off) to help expedite the curing. I had it - no big deal.

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like cystitis the burning sensation... (Sorry if that is spelt wrong) You can get an easy over the counter remedy to this which you put into water... it's rather nice actually... the drink. I got it once from drinking to much Orange juice... the acids in it aren't good for you in large doses, maybe you are the same or have a large quantity of somthing similar.
With the reast i think you really just need to wait to see you OBGYN and see you're doctor to ge the answer to many unanswered questions.

  17. QUESTION:
My feet feel broken all the time?
Ok, for the past few months, my right foot has felt like I broke it. The pain is bad when I first wake up, I can't walk for about 20 minutes or so. Now, both feet are doing it, but the left doesn't hurt nearly as bad. Last year, it all started with my heels, they felt like they were in pieces, I bought some insoles for heel fasciitis, and that problem eventually stopped. My mom told me it could be gout, she has some arthritis symptoms, including gout when she eats or drinks certain foods. I read about it, and something about uric acid, which made me think..I have had 2 kidney stones, and over 10 uti's in the past 8 years. And I am the biggest water drinker on the planet, always have been. I never had insurance, so just went to the er for those, never got a diagnosis, just really good pain meds:) . I do have insurance now, so I 'm wondering what kind of doctor I should see. Here is a little about me, if it helps narrow it down at all.
I'm 23, female, had 3 kids since I was 14(no judging please, I'm married to the daddy:) so I am a little overweight, never lost it all from the kids. but wasn't when I had the first stone at 16. I'm working on that, seems like no matter what I do for however long, it doesn't take off more than a few lbs, (was told 3rd shift can do that) I have been on 3rd shift for 4 1/2 yrs..which none of these probs started til recently. I am on my feet all night. And I get about 5 hours of sleep a day, max. Arthritis runs in my family, but I am so young, not sure here. Thanks for reading!

  18. QUESTION:
I need someone with medical understanding.?
I am a 35 year old male. 6’1 320 lb… Married and a father of two children… I am sick almost all the time. Into my mid 20s I was an athlete. When I had an injury that the doctors called a soft tissue injury of the ankle… They treated this by throwing pain killers at me for 7 years until I saw a specialist who told me it was in fact acute gout. I was told additionally I have a genetic condition called hyperlipidima my body naturally makes to many lipids. I was told they were over 10,000. Needless to say they were amazed I was alive. I have normal to low blood pressure. My cholesterol was 280…and is now 200. last time I had it checked. I have an uncler where my esophagus meets my stomach. They gave me a generic form of nexium to fix it. And it did from what I can tell.
I have this wonderful pain in my abdomen like all my organs get swollen and I also at that time double over in pain from cramps, as well as excessive gas and belching some kind of sulfur smelling something… It makes me vomit and have diarrhea to the point I lay on the bathroom floor and just hope if I was to fall asleep I would not wake up. I am tired, angry, cranky, depressed, and at a total loss. I talk to the doctor who tells me to losse weight. So, I try and well when I move it feels like 10000000 pins are slamming through my ankle so exercise is not easy. I can’t swim because I live in a cold weather region. I break bikes…flat out. I have lost 30 lb by diet modification. I cut out sugar and soda. I eat more veggies and less fats and red meat. Mostly because if I don’t I get a massive wave of pain from eating that stuff. I don’t sleep well… I have trouble breathing….I can’t stand for more then 2o min at a time…and if I do I can’t move for 3 days unless u take 800 mg anti-inflammation drugs. I have uric acid deposits in my feet. I take alloperinol for that when I can afford it. I can’t do this anymore. This needs to get fixed or I am a dead man. Oh and I have kidney stones…too…weee.

It sounds like you've taken the first step with your diet modifications. My experience with exercising while injured is that a recumbent bike at a commercial gym is the only way to go to start. If you have your doctor order it, the gym membership may be covered by insurance or at least tax deductible.

For me, it was overwhelming looking at how much had to happen for me to get better. It wasn't just the weight loss. It was the illnesses and surgeries, etc. It just seemed hopeless. I was reminded that you eat an elephant one day at a time. All I had to do was show up every morning at the gym regardless of how I felt and just do SOMETHING! I felt better mentally but not physically for a while.

The stomach stuff was paralyzing at times. I worked with a great gastroenterologist who did exploratory surgery and found my bowel had migrated over to the left side and was twisting on itself. I had to be persistent though. It took over a year to get that resolved.

Had to have knees replaced. One was put in wrong and was replaced again. Then it was the shoulder. Then carpal tunnel. Now it's ankle fusion. (you might want to look into that)

My point is, as long as you are doing something to try to make yourself better every single day, then you are fighting the good fight. Don't quit! Yes, I know it's painful and everyday won't feel like a good one, but just hang in there. One day at a time. I have to stay away from the pain meds too because of depression. That really sucks sometimes.

I think you really want to get better or you wouldn't have changed your diet. Set another goal. A reasonable one. And make a move toward it. Sometimes it seems like two steps forward and one step back but that's better than the alternative.

I wish you all the best!
