Uric Acid Kidney Stones

Written By: admin - Aug• 15•12

If I made a list of the top five vitamins for gout, potassium citrate would definitely be on it. Because potassium is very alkaline, and because potassium citrate is a well absorbed form of potassium, it has a good reputation as an alkalizer and as one of the best gout vitamins. Alkalization brings many benefits to gout sufferers, including raising body pH levels generally, which has been found to make uric acid more soluble and thus more dissolvable. But more specifically, potassium citrate is good at raising the pH of urine. So why should raising the pH of urine be important for gout sufferers?

AND THE SEVEN ARE

It has been found to lower uric acid, although not always.

It helps to keep uric acid (UA) levels lower, very important in preventing a repeat gout attack.

By raising urine pH the risk of uric acid stones in the kidneys developing is reduced. This risk is high among gout sufferers. About 20% (and perhaps more) of gout patients with acidic urine will develop uric acid kidney stones if they do nothing about the risk.

Potassium citrate has even been shown to dissolve uric acid kidney stones or halt their further development.

And it has dissolved the more common kinds stones in the kidneys made from various sorts of calcium.

It can halt the progression of excess uric acid (hyperuricemia) from developing into those oh-so-troublesome MSU crystals which are the immediate cause of the extraordinarily painful gout attacks.

It can avoid an unwelcome outcome of kidney stones, which is lithotripsy surgery.

THE NEED TO KNOW BASIS

Two facts need to be known. First do you have acidic urine? Acidic urine is a urine pH value of pH 5.0 - pH 5.5. Potassium citrate, usually effectively, alkalizes urine. How alkaline should it be? Accounts differ but somewhere within a range of pH 6.2 - pH 7.5.

Use pH test strips to discover what your urine pH is. Obtain pH test strips, or pH paper. It's a simple home test but follow the instructions in the manufacturer's instructions leaflet accurately. An incorrect reading may cause wrong conclusions that lead to incorrect actions.

The second fact to be learnt is your starting (baseline) level of serum (blood) potassium. This means a blood test arranged by your doctor. And it means repeated potassium tests to discover how well raising potassium is raising urine pH.

WORK WITH A DOCTOR

You MUST work with a doctor. There are many dangers of both high potassium (hyperkalemia) and low potassium (hypokalemia). Whilst you can test your urine pH with pH paper at home, it's also advisable to have your pH readings checked by a medical professional. After a period of this treatment your blood uric acid levels can be checked to discover whether the potassium citrate and pH testing procedure is working to raise urine PH and the real objective which is to lower uric acid. If it's not, the potassium citrate dose can be adjusted upwards, or perhaps downwards if it is.

Your doctor may want to consider other alkalizers such as potassium-magnesium citrate or potassium-sodium citrate which studies have shown also raise the pH of urine.

The amount of potassium citrate required to raise urine pH is not likely to be found over the counter (OTC) or on those online vitamin websites which sell dietary supplements of potassium citrate. These products contain 99mg per tablet. Almost certainly you will need much more than this to deliver therapeutic benefits, which means prescription potassium citrate. Happily potassium is not expensive.

NB. This article contains medical information, not medical advice. If you have gout, or hyperuricemia, always discuss dietary change with a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    How fast do Uric Acid Kidney stones form?
    It seems like the night after I eat meat (1/2 lb of beef or chicken) a I get a stone. I'm primarily vegetarian now, but this has happened the last two times I've eaten meat and I'm wondering if this is normal and can be expected every time I break my no-meat diet?

    The first time it happened I'd been meatless for 2 weeks, second time was 2 weeks after that.

    • ANSWER:
      Uric acid stones form over time, so it is unlikely that one meal of meat can instantly form a stone. If you are getting stones so frequently and you have it properly confirmed that they are uric acid, you need to see a suitably qualified professional about a low uric acid diet.

  2. QUESTION:
    Uric Acid Kidney Stones (Are they unusual)?
    My husband recently passed a kidney stone that was sent to labs for testing. He talked with his doctor yesterday and got the results back. The results show that the stone was made of of uric acid and no calcium in it whatsoever.

    The doctor used the word unusual three times when telling him about it being a uric acid stone. He said the more common ones are calcium stones. His had no calcium at all.

    Anyway, he wanted to do a 24 hour urine analysis and have it sent off. He had forgotten that we no insurance and said that it could be costly. He's checking on prices today.

    While we wait we was wondering why so unusual to have a uric acid stone. My husband only take two medications, which I am not sure if would contribute, He takes carbamazapine and celexa. He also advised him that he's a big MEAT eater. I read that uric acid stones can form from to much animal fat.

    So, why so unusual? He's passed it and feels great. Of course he don't want another one, but his using the word unusual three times has me worried and my husband.
    What can he do to make his urine less acidic?

    • ANSWER:
      Uric acid stones represent about 5 - 10% of all kidney stones. Developing a uric acid stone means his urine is excessively acidic. Some people have a high level of acid naturally. For others, things like high levels of fructose or alcohol can do it. Another more common reason is people trying to lose weight and starve themselves. The rapid breakdown of fat will acidify the blood which will in turn acidify the urine.

  3. QUESTION:
    increase body's acidity to dissolve uric acid kidney stones?
    Can anyone recommend vitamins or herbs that assist the body in creating a high pH environment in the kidney's to dissolve uric acid kidney stones and keep them from recurring. I know there are medications for this and I'm already on those medications. I was looking for a more natural solution to prevent recurring uric acid kidney stones from forming. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
      I would like to relate my experience. After two operations (the first one unsuccessful, both painful) I asked my urologist how to avoid getting more stones. He is reputed to be the best in the city. He said "drink plenty of water and call when when you get the next one". Note: not if, but when. Thanks, mate!!

      So I decided to find out why they happened. I researched all the reasons that can cause them, short-listed them, and did the blood, urine, etc. tests to determine which one caused it. It was an imbalance in the para-thyroid glands causing DHEA and PTH imbalances, along with a couple of lesser problems - dehydration and diet. I found out how to correct that (diet and supplements) and have now been free of kidney since that time, 5 years ago. I will not go into exactly how I did this, because that was specific to me and my problem.

      Can I suggest that you do what-ever you can to find out what the original problem is. Drinking water and diet changes are good to do, but there is usually a root cause. Doctors will only treat the symptoms which is too late, by then you already have more stones. Do the research, the work will give you a good outcome.

      By the way, just because a food is alkaline, it does not mean it produces an alkaline response in the body. Any protein foods (such as milk) actually produce an acid result. Likewise, lemon and orange juice, although acids, produce an alkaline response. Too much red beets and very green leafy vege's like spinach can actually help cause stones (they produce oxalate in the body) so best to avoid these.

      Also, contrary though it may sound, a good quality calcium supplement will help prevent kidney stones in the future. This is because one reason for stones is that when the body is short of calcium (used for almost every system in the body as well as bones) the body will suck it out of the bones to use elsewhere because it is so essential. This ends up accumulating in the kidneys as calcium carbonate or oxalate compounds, which forms into stones. Good quality supplements are made from calcium silicate, which cannot be formed into stones and since it builds up the calcium levels in the body, will help prevent stones in future. Also, calcium in the is form actually binds with oxalates in such a way that they are unable to bind into a stone. Silicates also inhibit oxalate formation. Make sure it also contains magnesium and vitamins D and K, which are needed by the body to absorb calcium. Omega-3 supplements will also help, as does selenium.

      One more point. The body is naturally slightly alkaline. Artificially pushing it into an acid balance can cause damage on a cellular level all up to tissue level and have severe long term effects on your health. One of the precursors to people forming kidney stones is an acid body balance. Limit dairy foods and meat of all kinds, limit processed foods and anything coming from sugar, white flour, white rice, potatoes, and other starchy foods. Avoid chocolate (sorry) and especially all carbonated drinks, colas in particular. Brown rice is positively good for you, as it sweet potato, whole-grain breads, fruits, etc.

      But please note: there are different types of stones, each with a different mechanism for forming kidney stones. You ideally need to know which type before make a decision on how to deal with it.

      One big thing I learned is that if the body is in proper balance and has the nutrition it needs, it knows how to take care of itself and will do so if you give it the right working materials. Good luck, I hope you can get free of this, I know how debilitatingly painful it is.

  4. QUESTION:
    Is there any ways to get rid of uric acid kidney stones?

    • ANSWER:
      Having suffered kidney stones (although what mine were made of was inconclusive) I have found that the easiest way to prevent (or ease) kidney stones is to drink PLENTY of water--like 12 eight ounce glasses a day. :-)
      My urologist told me a person should be drinking enough that their urine runs nearly clear.

  5. QUESTION:
    I need a natural cure for uric acid kidney stones, natural cure for uric acid stones.?

    • ANSWER:
      There's a product called UltraInflamX that many of my clients have used to eliminate the occurance of gout due to elevated uric acid levels, but I'm not sure it will work as well for stones.

      The best natural stone remedy I've heard of is the freshly squeezed lemon juice and olive oil treatment. Take two tablespoons of each twice a day before meals. This therapy also cleanses the gall bladder and liver.

      I'd also suggest you visit a naturopath. If you don't know one, you can find one at www.trinityschool.org. They have them listed by state on their web site. I work with one in Michigan who graduated from their program, and she has my utmost respect. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

  6. QUESTION:
    I have uric acid stone in kidney So please advise that which is best from alopathic or homeopathic?
    Stone is now passed from kidney and 3CM away fro kidney in uritrac

    • ANSWER:
      drink lots of water every day to help it pass (8 glasses a day or so).

      Uric acid is a by product of protein, so maybe try going on a vegan (no meat or dairy) diet for awhile....or at least cut back a bit on meat and dairy...

      Sometimes a urologist can put you into a sonic machine to use sound waves to break up the kidney stone.

      If you don't have insurance, call the public health department in your area and ask about free or low cost clinics.

    • ANSWER:
      No. Some doctors profess to dietary habits as the cause, but many studies show that some people have kidney stone with no link to diet.

  11. QUESTION:
    Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout?
    Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout. This painful condition is the result of needle-like crystals of uric acid precipitating in joints and capillaries.

    Elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia) can result from high intake of purine-rich foods, and/or impaired excretion by the kidneys. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. These uric acid stones are radiolucent and so do not appear on an abdominal plain x-ray or CT scan. Their presence must be diagnosed by ultrasound for this reason. Very large stones may be detected on x-ray by their displacement of the surrounding kidney tissues. Some patients with gout eventually get uric kidney stones.[citation needed]
    ================================================

    What is serum or purine-rich foods?How can uric acid make crystals ?

    • ANSWER:
      Serum means in the blood, it is not a food. Liquids like blood can hold a certain amount of a dissolved solid like uric acid. If there is more uric acid in the blood than it can hold, crystals of excess uric acid will form.
      from wikipedia food sources of purine
      Purines are found in high concentration in meat and meat products, especially internal organs such as liver and kidney. Plant based diets are generally low in purines [1].

      Examples of high-purine sources include: sweetbreads, anchovies, sardines, liver, beef kidneys, brains, meat extracts (e.g., Oxo, Bovril), herring, mackerel, scallops, game meats, and gravy.

      A moderate amount of purine is also contained in beef, pork, poultry, fish and seafood, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms, green peas, lentils, dried peas, beans, oatmeal, wheat bran, wheat germ, and hawthorn.

  12. QUESTION:
    What can cause elevated serum uric acid?
    Elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia) can result from high intake of purine-rich foods, and/or impaired excretion by the kidneys. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. ===========================================

    What do you mean by uric acid stones are radiolucent and so do not appear on an abdominal plain x-ray or CT ? Where doo these stones take place in the human body.

    • ANSWER:
      That means that these crystallized kidney stone (which is caused by elevated serum uric acid) is not likely to be seen on a general abdominal x-ray where other kind of kidney stone will.

      Kidney stones are usually found in kidneys.

  17. QUESTION:
    Need help with figuring out kidney stones?
    Ok so I have kidney stones, MANY kidney stones, last exam they lost count of how many I had in each kidney. We have done blood test, and the analyzed a stone and it is an oxalate stone (calcium). My blood says I have high uric acid , normal is 2.5 to 6 for woman and I am at a 6.5 and it also shows up in my urine. My calcium levels are normal. So..... Uric acid would cause uric acid stones and would never have calcium stones. Why is my uric acid somewhat high and where are the calcium stones coming from if my calcium levels are fine??? sooooo confused!

    • ANSWER:
      There are things that you may be eating or drinking that depletes the body of calcium. When too much calcium is pulled out of the body it goes into the kidneys and this can form stones - calcium oxalate.

      For instance, soda can deplete the body of calcium, meaning if you are taking supplements or getting calcium in your food, it will pull it out of the body. THere are different foods that do this.

  18. QUESTION:
    What can I eat to prevent kidney stones?
    I had 2 procedures done to remove my kidney stones. Now I am scared to get them again, although I was told I had another one but to wait three months to see if I could pass it. If not, I would got through one of the procedures again. I was given a pamphlet that said to limit my intake of chicken, pork, fish, eggs, pork, and beef which produce uric acid stones. And limit coffee, tea, and the list goes on for the prevention of calcium stones. So what can I eat? I feel so discouraged. I was previously in a diet before I got ill with these kidney stones where I lost 35 pounds and eating fish and chicken was what I would eat, now I can't. I also limited my carbs intake because that is all is what I ate due to almost being diabetic. So now what? Will I have to become a vegetarian? Can someone please help me. I am so discouraged! :(

  19. QUESTION:
    which is not a reason for kidney stones?
    - diabetes
    - infection stones or struvites from UTI
    - cystine stones
    - uric acid stones

    • ANSWER:
      This is a strange question - the way it is phrased, it cannot be answered correctly. Three of the choices are not reasons for kidney stones, but it is asking for a single choice. The choices include three types of stones, but kidney stones are not the cause of kidney stones. Diabetes doesn't directly cause kidney stones, but it can cause kidney damage that makes a person more susceptible to kidney stones.

  20. QUESTION:
    chronic kidney stone problems?
    for the past year ive had a few small kidney stones made up of uric acid in my kidneys and they cause pain quite frequently and there is always microscopic blood in my urine. like i think there is a stone permanently stuck in one of those tubes (whatever they are called) or in a bad place in a kidney. im really worried this will cause cancer eventually or something. ive had so many tests but tests and treatments arent good for uric acid stones. any advice please? will this cause cancer? thanks

    • ANSWER:
      I hope that you are seeing a urologist! If you have a painful stone stuck your doc might try an ultra sound method to break down the stone.

      Those kidney stones are one of the most painful things on the plante to experience. Both myself and my boys have had them. One thing we have in common is not drinking water or enough water. My oldest son has water with him all of the time he never wants another kidney stone in his life.

      Try drinking purified water. Purified is important. You might have well water where you live that contributes to your stones.
      Don't just buy any bottle water. Some are straight out of a pipe or a tap somewhere not so desirable. Make sure it is purified.

      I have never heard of stones causing cancer. Too many stones can really compermise the health and effectivness of your urinary system.

      http://www.ehealthmd.com/library/kidneystones/KS_prevention.html check out this site. It will give you information. Important to learn how to eat to prevent the buildup of the stones. And bottom line.........water water water water.

  21. QUESTION:
    I had a kidney that was 100% uric acid???
    My doctor sent a kidney stone away and the results were it is 100% Uric Acid. Exactly what does this mean for me? Are there certain types of food or drinks I should avoid?

    • ANSWER:
      Don't quite know what this means but my advice is to drink lots and lots of spring (purified) water. Also eat lot's of fruit and veges. Your body needs detoxing so eat a lot of raw foods.

      Good luck.

  22. QUESTION:
    Can taking Creatine Monohydrate cause me to get kidney stones later in life?
    I took about 25 grams of creatine monohydrate per day (four times a day in 5 gram doses) for 5 days as a loading period, then cut down to about 2.5 grams a day to maintain healthy levels, but I was following directions of my personal trainer and have no personal knowledge of this substance.

    I recently read online that the unused creatine in your system turns to creatinine, which is supposedly similar to uric acid, which causes kidney stones if high amounts run through your system.

    I'm wondering if this is true, or if it's unverified nonsense.

Once a while I get tiny pain sensation for 10 seconds.so I'll just keep drinking water, so it will not get worse. Is there any way to avoid this pain other than drinking water

    • ANSWER:
      hello friend,

      so sorry for you friend,be careful,there are a lot of implications for kidney stones,so be careful friend.now see,you have the best suggestion,that is to drink water,then the others are as follows,see it.

      Doctors do not always know what causes a stone to form. While certain foods may promote stone formation in people who are susceptible, scientists do not believe that eating any specific food causes stones to form in people who are not susceptible.

      A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation.

      In addition, more than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.

      Cystinuria and hyperoxaluria are two other rare, inherited metabolic disorders that often cause kidney stones. In cystinuria, too much of the amino acid cystine, which does not dissolve in urine, is voided, leading to the formation of stones made of cystine. In patients with hyperoxaluria, the body produces too much oxalate, a salt. When the urine contains more oxalate than can be dissolved, the crystals settle out and form stones.

      Hypercalciuria is inherited, and it may be the cause of stones in more than half of patients. Calcium is absorbed from food in excess and is lost into the urine. This high level of calcium in the urine causes crystals of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate to form in the kidneys or elsewhere in the urinary tract.

      Other causes of kidney stones are hyperuricosuria, which is a disorder of uric acid metabolism; gout; excess intake of vitamin D; urinary tract infections; and blockage of the urinary tract. Certain diuretics, commonly called water pills, and calcium-based antacids may increase the risk of forming kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium in the urine.

      Calcium oxalate stones may also form in people who have chronic inflammation of the bowel or who have had an intestinal bypass operation, or ostomy surgery. As mentioned earlier, struvite stones can form in people who have had a urinary tract infection. People who take the protease inhibitor indinavir, a medicine used to treat HIV infection, may also be at increased risk of developing kidney stones.

      PREVENTION:

      A person who has had more than one kidney stone may be likely to form another; so, if possible, prevention is important. To help determine their cause, the doctor will order laboratory tests, including urine and blood tests. The doctor will also ask about the patient’s medical history, occupation, and eating habits. If a stone has been removed, or if the patient has passed a stone and saved it, a stone analysis by the laboratory may help the doctor in planning treatment.

      The doctor may ask the patient to collect urine for 24 hours after a stone has passed or been removed. For a 24-hour urine collection, the patient is given a large container, which is to be refrigerated between trips to the bathroom. The collection is used to measure urine volume and levels of acidity, calcium, sodium, uric acid, oxalate, citrate, and creatinine—a product of muscle metabolism. The doctor will use this information to determine the cause of the stone. A second 24-hour urine collection may be needed to determine whether the prescribed treatment is working.for more information about kidney stones,please visit this website: http://www.kidney.niddk.nih.gov/Kudiseases/pubs/stonesadults/

      i hope this helps you..!

      have a happy living and good health..!!

      all the best friend..!!

  24. QUESTION:
    What foods will help to decrease Uric Acid?
    I can seem to find a lot of foods to avoid, but relatively few to eat to help reduce the Uric Acid in my blood. I don't have gout, what they are more concerned about is my developing kidney stones. Only thing I could find was cherries. Are there any other foods that help?

    • ANSWER:
      Raised uric acid,above normal levels, is known as hyperuricemia. While uric acid is actually a waste product left over from metabolism of chemical compounds called purines, it can also be found in some foods and alcohol.

      There are no foods that can actually lead to lowering of uric acid,the trick lies in avoiding the foods that actually lead to a rise in its level.

      Normally, uric acid is eliminated from the body by the kidneys and a bit of hyperuricemia usually does very little harm. In fact, most people with high levels of uric acid in the blood never develop gout. However, some people are more sensitive to high levels of uric acid, and their bodies will form crystals that accumulate in the joints and cause painful gout symptoms.

      Foods containing uric acid and the compounds that metabolize into uric acid include most animal meats, such as beef, pork and seafood. Poultry and ham, the "white meats," can have some degree of purine content and should be eaten very sparingly, but they are not as detrimental as the "red meats." Bacon, however, is very high in purines due to the processing used to make it ready for human consumption and should be avoided. Alcohol and breads which contain yeast are also foods high in uric acid that should be kept out of the diet.
      Dietry restrictions, are extremely helpful in lowering levels of uric acid in the body, and will usually involve reducing or cutting out foods that have high levels of purines.
      Black cherry juice, also known as sour cherry or bitter cherry, is also being used in great quantities to help relieve the symptoms of gout in conjunction with diets to reduce uric acid. Celery seed extract and bromelain are some popular alternative medicine remedies that have been used as natural anti-inflammatories and have been well received by those who suffer chronic inflammation. Adding eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and folic acid to the diet can also assist in reducing inflammation in gout episodes.
      Also reducing weight helps in the loweing the uric acid levels, but the crash dietry programmes or sudden weight loss can actually lead to increased levels of uric acid due to increased catabolism.
      Many other substances if consumed in moderation, will lead to decreased levels like yucca, turmeric and silymarin, although their effect may be due to the antiinflammatory properties.
      Ther best thing is to consult a doctor and follow his treatment and the dietry regieme that is prescribed for the particular patient.

  25. QUESTION:
    I am a male of 58 yrs. I am having high uric acid level and on medication.?
    Somebody told me regular intake of lemon juice with water helps to bring down uric acid level and also inhibits formation of uric stone in kidney. Is it correct? If so, how many lemons should I consume?
    I seek educated answers only.

  26. QUESTION:
    My husband has high levels of uric acid in his body. He also has loose poos. Are these connected?
    He has just recovered from passing a kidney stone - second in 5 years and suffers from gout. His poos have always smelt acidic or sour. Is there a connection between excess uric acid and odd poos?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes they are connected, and I will explain it to you backwards.

      People with gout are at an increase risk for developing kidney stones. Gout occurs when large aggregates of urate crystals collect in joints, bones and in renal tubules.

      What causes uric acid crystallization and stone formation? It is when urine pH is low.

      What causes low urine pH? Chronic diarrhea and also dehydration.

      Hope this helps.

  27. QUESTION:
    Can lemonade and olive oil dissolve kidney stones?
    And I'm referring to the stones caused by uric acid. I knew that there are differnet kind of stones and some people find some remedy, depending on what kind of kidney stones so I asked. I know there is that shockwave treatment to break up the stones but I was wondering if those two products are known to work. Lemonade has a lot of citrit acid in it, right?
    actually yes it can, I just found this out and this does have testimonials.
    http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/kidney_stones.html

    By the way, I meant lemon juice, not lemonade. Sorry.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes! Uric acid stones are the only stones that can be dissolved. Lemonade is excellent for preventing stones, but I am honeslty not sure if it will desolve them. You can get a prescription from your doctor for "Potassium Citrate" and that will even out the acid in your urine and then dissolve the stones by making your urine basic, or "normal". The procedure you are speaking of is ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy). It breaks up the stone and turns it into gravel (smaller peices that are easier to pass). Hope this helps you out! Good luck and take care!

  28. QUESTION:
    Is there anything i can eat or drink that helps prevent kidney stones?
    they are a mixture of uric acid and calcium something.
    helpppp!
    i dont drink pop at all! water is my main drink. and i also drink plenty of cranberry juice. im a pretty healthy eater. but ive had 3 stones in 2 years. well 6 stones, on 3 different occasions

    • ANSWER:
      It isn't so much what you can drink to help it is what you shouldn't drink. If they are made of calcium you should limit your calcium intake. Also, don't drink lots of tea or milk and decrease amount of sodas. You should also increase the amount of fluids you drink and cranberry juice helps keep the kidneys flushed out.

    Kidney stones and pain?
    Hey guys about 5 months ago I had an ultrasound and they supposedly found kidney stones although they aren't 100% sure that's what it is. Anyways about 3 months ago I started to develop a bad pain in my bladder as well, it used to come and go but now its constant and it hurts the most when I urinate. My stones are supposedly made up of uric acid and I've never passed one. Has anyone experienced these symptoms? Can this happen with stones? thanks

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
      Yep, the pain your describing can be kidney stones, hopefully it will pass, and believe me, you"ll know when it does. Best home remedy, start flooding yourself with water, as much as you can stand. If the pain doesn't stop, or you have trouble urinating, head to the E.R.

  31. QUESTION:
    Recently had 24 hr urine test. Results were as followed creatine clearance is high 231 and uric acid is high?
    960. Recently had kidney stone. Could the abnormal results be from stone or likely from something else?

    • ANSWER:
      A high clearance is good.

      The elevation in uric acid could indicate the cause of the stone. Uric acid stones are common, but aren't that rare.

    how could i avoid getting kidney stones?
    high on uric acid

    • ANSWER:
      An alkaline diet might perhaps help as a lot of kidney stones are caused by too much acidity from uric acid in red meat, prawns and other animal protein. Prawns are probably the worst.

      If you want further information on an alkaline diet you can find it in a web search for "alkaline diet".

  41. QUESTION:
    My URIC acid level is anywhere from 9-11 over the past 7 years. I just had the worst gout attack of all time?
    Now I feel lower back pain and testicular pain with a touch of abdominal. I am wondering if it is kidney stones. I often have to force my urine, sometimes I go so much more than I have drank water in that recent time frame, all I drink is water and I have a very limited diet that strays to cheap potato chips twice a month maybe. What is causing this pain? I only take (0.6) mg of colchicine the past few days and only taking one pill a day doesnt normally cause me this much discomfort. I have the "dull tooth ache" feeling in my back with throbbing teste.

  43. QUESTION:
    Sharp pains in bladder just before and while I urinate!! 5 days now! :( ?
    Ok, so I played basketball for like 3 hrs in 95 degree heat on Saturday. Was pretty dehydrated after, but was okay and recovered. The next day I went to pee and the right side of my bladder had these sharp stabbing pains! It's not up near the kidneys.. it's below the belly button to the right close to the groin. It feels a somewhat better after I'm done, but still has a sharp lingering pain all the time. Then when I have to pee again (i guess as the bladder is full) the intense pain comes back! It hasn't gotten any better and is now Wednesday. Went to the doctor today and they found no blood or infection in the urine. Gave me flexoril and said it's probably a pulled muscle. By the way, I don't have any history with kidney stones but my dad has had gout and uric acid stones sometimes. Anyway, the only diet changes lately have been drinking coffee and taking Pepcid. Thanks for you help!! :D

    • ANSWER:
      The might be a formation of urate crystals or some other mineral crystals in your bladder. When you were dehydrated, the kidney reabsorbed more water back into the bloodstream from tubules in the kidneys. That will result in the increase of the concentration of the urine that enter the bladder. When this concentration reaches the saturation point where the minerals cannot be dissolved anymore, crystallization happens and a tiny stone might have formed and stuck somewhere in the wall lining of the bladder. When there is more urine enter into the bladder, the pressure pushes the crystal against the wall and cause the pain you were suffering.

      If you want to confirm it, you might need to go for a X-Ray. But I have to tell you if that crystal is a pure uric acid crystal, it is not visible under X-ray because it is transparent.

      Here is the dilemma, if you don't drink water, more or bigger crystal might form. If you drink more water, you might feel the pain more often. Personally, I will go for drinking more water and urinate frequently, at least the chance of dissolving (melting) and flush out the crystal is higher. Otherwise, you might need to go for surgery to remove the stones.

  44. QUESTION:
    Are there any side effects for taking colchicine long term? Should I change to taking allopurinol ?
    I am a 50 years old male good health. Since my first gout attack, I have been taking colchicine 500 gm daily for the last 10 months, and have not had a second gout attack, except for some minor pains in the knee caps. which usually happens after a night of alcohol drinking. I drink up to half a bottle of whisky and red wine each week. My uric acid is high. I was treated for kidney stones several years back.

    • ANSWER:
      The most common side effects of colchicine involve the stomach and bowel and are dose related. These include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. One of the most worrisome side effects of colchicine is that it can damage the bone marrow causing severe anemia and seriously low white blood counts, thereby increasing the risk of infections. All patients taking colchicine long-term require blood count monitoring. Colchicine can also cause hair loss, weakness, and nerve irritation.... gout is at least twice as effective at lowering uric acid levels as the standard drug allopurinol. .. . Febuxostat has a different chemical structure than colchicine.

  45. QUESTION:
    Help! I have been in hospital 2 times with "kidney stone pains", nausea, and now heartburn! Need to know cause
    I have been in the hospital before, due to kidney stones. But the past two weeks have been very strange for me. I have been in the ER twice for "kidney stone pain", I was incredibly nauseated, and puked in the hospital parking lot, I was prescribed "Ciprofloxacin" because I also had a Urinary track infection, & it's been over a week since I was in the hospital. I keep having themost intense heartburn/chest pains, but I want to wait it out at home. I have also been more anxious this week, more than any other week in my life, & I have no idea why. I am not sure if the medicine causes this? I have also switched my diet, as i am now a vegan, & do not eat meat, though I used to eat Pizza Hut chicken wings like there was no tomorrow, so maybe the uric acid has something to do with this. I have a yeast infection now because of taking the "cipro" but my heartburn lasts for about 12 hours, non stop, and hurts & makes me short of breath. I take tums, senna laxitive, and advil pm, nothing helps!!

      Have you read the pamphlet that comes with the pills? My experience has been that anti-b's cause a lot of side effects. If the side effect is something to worry about, it'll tell you.

      In either case, I would mention it to the doctor.

      I took Levaquin and it made me very jumpy, I had trouble getting to sleep, and my sleep was restless.

      It's good that you've gone veg - animal proteins are believed to contribute to stones.

  46. QUESTION:
    E. Coli bacteria in Renal stones?
    Hello,

    I have been detected with two stones in the kidney 0.38 and 0.57 cm by ultrasound KUB. The stones aren't seen on x-ray so they are suspected to be of uric acid.

    So the stones themselves doesn't bother me that much, they are small and probably can be dissolved using medicines or they will pass spontaniously.

    What bothers me is how I can make the antibiotic to penetrate or what kind of antibiotic can penetrate renal stones? Because I have persistant urethral inflammation due to E. Coli. The bacteria seems to be hidden in the renal stones to where no antibiotic could penetrate.
    I have seen reports on analyzed uric stones to contain culturable E. Coli bacteria inside.

    About the bacteria being hidden inside and thus being not able to infect - it's speculation, just pure logic which probably not true in this case since uric stone is not that solid formation.

    • ANSWER:
      If the bacteria is so encased in the stone then it couldnt cause the inflamation. Do you have anal sex? E. coli in normal flora for the intestines and can infect you. If not, Does your girlfriend wipe correctly? If she intruduces the bacteria to her area while wiping and you have sex you could get it that way. Just my thoughts.

  47. QUESTION:
    Is this true? My husband's 2mm kidney stone isn't what's bothering him?
    My husband has had 2 CT scans in the past 3 months both of which show a 2mm kidney stone. He he's been to the ER for the usual symptoms (lower back and flank pain, blood in urine, fever, chills) and the urologist we took him to a few days ago scoffs at him. His blood work was normal and the CT showed that there was nothing else going on. When we gave the urologist the CD of the CT scan he told us he didn't see anything that would be bothering him and he's acting like my husband is just trying to get pain meds (he never asked for them either, I asked them to give him something for the pain). When I told him that I saw the stone on the CT myself, he said, "well yes there's a tiny stone but that wouldn't be causing his symptoms". I'm so frustrated. My husband is not a big baby and what's going on with him looks exactly like what people feel with stones. One of the ER docs said sometimes a stone can move then go back into the kidney over and over and I think that's what is happening. But the urologist is acting like a 2mm isn't big enough to bother him. I'd like to hear about other people's experiences. What can I do for him? He has Lortabs for pain, which don't seem to help much. Does the lemon juice/olive oil mixture really work? Don't know what the stone is made of though, probably calcium or uric acid. He is Japanese and has a family history of stones and gout if that makes a difference. Is a 2mm stone really too small for him to feel? Please help.

    • ANSWER:
      The ureter would differ in its diameter down its length and a 2mm stone may become stuck or slowly scrape down causing alot of pain.
      Mine was fairly small, yet I passed out several times from the pain(and I was fine with natural, drug-free childbirth).
      The stone ended up becoming stuck half way down so I tried the olive oil/lemon juice concoction which was fairly foul and drank lots of water afterwards. All that happened was that I became very bloated and didn't pass much urine. I then tried Coke(as it has caffeine-diuretic) and after drinking a few litres, I ended up passing the stone which by then had broken up into tiny sand-like pieces.

  48. QUESTION:
    How to get enough calcium and protein in my diet?
    Hello to everyone reading.

    My husband and I are both healthy eaters. We both enjoy a healthy, balanced diet and exercise. However, I have an issue. While I love most fruits and vegetables, and get my daily intake, I absolutely hate milk, and most dairy products. Also, meat turns my stomach a lot of the times, because I am have the Mirena, and I take an estrogen supplement, because of my Endmitriosis.

    The estrogen seems to give me a bit of nausea sometimes, mostly concerning meat and eggs. The smell of them cooking causes my stomach to turn. I know that beans, and peas, and other vegetables contain protein, and iron. However, because of the Endomitriosis, I tend to be a bit anemic, so meat is a necessity for me. I cannot take iron pills, because I also have an issue with my kidneys, I make uric acid stones, and iron pills can make them worse, as can soy.

    Also, I despise milk. I do not like the taste of it at all, so I bought some chai syrup, which I love. I add a tablespoon of it to my milk, and I can drink it. Though, it is quite sugary. Is that completely ruining the benefits of drinking milk? I force myself to eat yogurt, but I am not a huge fan of it. I do take a calcium supplement, but with my hormonal issues, I need my bones to be in the best shape they can be, for my old age, lol.

    So, my questions are...

    1) How can I make sure I get enough protein and iron?
    2) Does the sugar in the chai syrup completely cancel out the benefit of drinking the milk?
    3) What other ways can I make sure I get enough calcium?

    BQ: Any women out there who have insane hormonal issues, who might be reading this. Have you ever had your hormonal supplements make you sick, and unable to eat certain things? If so, how did you get past it?

    Thank you to everyone who reads. Please, do not tell me to talk to a doctor, I have already obviously done that, I am just looking for new/other ideas.

    Please and Thank you! :D

    • ANSWER:
      try a Whey protein supplement. The bioavailabilty of it is approximately 98% as where a chicken egg is approximately 90 when cooked. Soy tends to upset the stomach any way. But soy does have its benefits for menopausal women such as helping with hormone levels. Daily recommended intake for calcium is 700 to upwards of 3000mg a day. I would recommend no more than 1500-2000 really cause you can develop kidney stones. As for the syrup in your milk its a great alternative to Chocolate syrup. And its probably sucrose based which is better than fructose. besides milk there are supplemental pills that range from 100-250 mg. A daily mumultivitamin specifically for women is also available. I recommend the GNC women's one to all my female personal ttraining clients because of the slow disintegration rate so it gives you a constant influx of vitamins and minerals.
      You can try supplementing with soy isoflavone too to help with hot flashes and what not.

Uric Acid Kidney Stone Treatment

Written By: admin - Aug• 15•12

Yes, you can help lower uric acid levels naturally with juniper berries. This is a common herb for gout victims trying to solve how to reduce uric acid levels to prevent further gout attacks.

And it's really important to prevent these, since recurring gout attacks can result in permanently damaged joints and other complications. Here, you'll discover info. on the juniper berry remedy and what other steps you need to take.

What Are Juniper Berries?

Juniper berries (Juniperus communis) are small (approx. 1/4 inch) blue / purple berries from the Juniper evergreen shrub. They are probably most well known as the flavoring in gin and are in fact also known as "gin berries".

What Are Their Benefits?

Aside from their use in gin, they have many beneficial natural health properties such as in relieving joint pain, arthritic pain and even an aid for digestion. But, and this is why we are here, they are also very useful for helping to reduce uric acid levels, as well as reducing the inflammation of an actual gout attack.

They are able to do this because of their diuretic properties that aid the kidneys and bladder get rid of excess water, plus, their ability to help the kidneys process and remove waste products and expel them from the body. And they help prevent uric acid crystals forming in the kidneys, so that the uric acid remains in solution and is more able to be expelled from the body.

How Do I Take Them?

Juniper berries are probably more easily taken in capsule form. A typical dose would be 1 capsule x 2 times a day for 4 weeks. But, as always, talk to your doctor first of course.

But Why Do I Need to Reduce Uric Acid Levels?

Now, remembering that gout is the result of abnormally high levels of uric acid leading to the formation of uric acid crystals in and around your joints, you can see why juniper berries can be such an effective herb for reducing uric acid levels in your blood.

And there is a pressing need to figure out how to reduce uric acid levels and maintain them at 'normal' healthy levels...

Did you know that once having suffered one gout attack, you are more likely to suffer repeat attacks? And did you know that frequent repeat attacks of gout can lead to permanently damaged joints and damaged kidneys? Well, both are true. Which is why you need to control your uric acid at normal levels.

Are Juniper Berries All I Need to Take or Do?

Unfortunately no. Juniper berries are just one of many natural remedies that you can use, both to relieve a gout attack, and, to lower uric acid and keep maintaining it at healthy levels. There are other herbs, fruits, vegetables, cleansers, detoxing agents, supplements, and many more. And on top of those you have to look very carefully indeed at other things like your diet, weight, body pH and lifestyle. A lot of work but worth it.

You're in luck though. There's a gout report available online that has all the info. you need. It is what thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program.

And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods. So that you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage.

If you want to get gout pain relief in 2 hours plus prevent your gout returning in the future, then simply click here and discover how you can quickly do both without expensive drugs with their horrible side effects.

Uric Acid Kidney Stone Diet

What is gout?Gout is a metabolic disease, often familial, associated with hyperuricemia (high uric acid in blood) leading to acute arthritis, usually inflammation of the big toe, but may also effect other joints. Hyperuricemia can be because of over production or under excretion of uric acid, sometimes both.
Note : Some people have a high level of uric acid but do not form crystals or have gout. Also, rarely some peopel with a normal level or uric acid get gout attacks. However as a rule the higher the level of uric acid, the greater the chance of developing gout.

Why does uric acid build up?
It is often familial. Alcohol and certain medicines are important secondary causes. Alcohol ingestion promotes hyperuricemia by increasing urate production and decreasing the renal excretion of uric acid. Certain foods may tip the balance to raise your uric acid higher than normal. In particular, if you eat a lot of heart, herring, sardines, yeast extracts or mussles it may increase the level of uric acid. Some medicines such as diuretics and aspirin may raise the level of uric acid. People with certain other conditions such as obesity, kidney damage, diabetes, mellitus, bone marrow disorders and lipid disorders have an increased risk of developing gout?

How common is gout and who gets it?
Gout affects about 1 in 200 adults
Men are more commonly affected than women. Six out of 1,000 men develop gout, compared with one out of 1,000 women.
A first attack of gout typically develops in middle age, but it sometimes occurs in younger people. The first attack of gout in men most often occur between the age of 30 and 50. In women, it is rare for gout to occur until after menopause.
It tends to run in some families as there is family history of gout in about 1 in 5 cases. The genetic make up that you inherit from your family may be a factor in becoming an 'under-excreter' of uric acid.

What are the symptoms of gout?
Gout usually occurs in 'attacks'. An attack typically develops quickly over a few hours. Acute gouty arthritis is characterized by its sudden onset, frequently nocturnal, either without apparent precipitating cause or following rapid fluctuations in serum urate levels. Either increase or decrease in the serum urate level can precipitate a gouty attack. Common precipitants are alcohol excess (particularly beer), changes in medication that affect urate metabolism and fasting in hospitalized patients before medical procedures.
How is gout diagnosed?
Gout is usually diagnosed if you have the typical symptoms and a raised blood level or uric acid. If you think you have gout, see your general physician. He or she will ask about your symptoms and examine you, He or she may also ask about your medical history, especially family history. A blood test will measure the levels of urate in your blood but the level may also be high in healthy people who don't have gout. Fluid may be removed from your swollen joint with a needle. This usually causes no more discomfort than a blood test. If urate crystals can be seen in the fluid under a microscope, you have gout. If calcium crystals are seen, you have a similar condition called pseudo gout. An x-ray of your affected joint may be taken to rule out other medical conditions. It is also important to screen the kidneys in all cases with gount. Uric acid kidney stones are present in 5-10% of patients with gouty arthritis. Hyperurecemia correlates highly with the likelihood of developing stones, with the risk of stone formation receding 50% in patients with a serum urate level above 13 mg/dl. This and associated risk factors like hypertension, alcohol use and diabetes can lead to renal failure. Once diagnosed as a case of gout your base line uric acid should be maintained at 5 mg/dl and below.

What the complications of gout?
Kidney damage
Arthritis and joint immobility
Urinary stones-increased risk
Is gout serious?
A gout attack can be very painful. However, other effects from gout are uncommon. Joint damage may occur if you have recurring attacks. In a few people, uric acid cystals form kidney stones or may cause some kidney damage. Sometimes the crystals form bumps (tophi) under the skin. These are usually harmless and painless but sometimes form in awkward places such as the end of fingers. Tophi occasionally become infected.

Will obesity and consumption of certain foods lead to gout?
Obesity is common cause for gout according to current research. At least half of all gout sufferers are overweight, if not obese. The obese body puts a heavy load on the kidneys, above and beyond what they were meant to handle.
Research is also showing that it is not the protein that adds to the gout problem, but actually "purine rich foods". These include beans, peas, anchovies, liver, brains and (ironically enough) kidneys. Beer is also purine rich. It is the breakdown of the purine that causes uric acid to be formed. If the extra uric acid cannot be flushed from the system, they crystallize and lodge in joints, causing gout.

How Unani experts can help you manage your condition?
Unani experts propose the following measures for people with gout.
Weight loss : if you are overweight. This will quickly reduce the load on your kidneys and help ease the gout.

Dietary advise : A high uric acid level may be lowered by avoiding a high protein intake and foods rich in purines such as organ meats, sea food, yeast/yeast extracts, beer, other alcoholic beverages, beans, peas, lentils, oatmeal, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower and mushrooms. If you drink a lot of sugar-sweetened soft drinks, especially those containing fructose, it may help to reduce the number or cut them out altogether. Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water (upto 2 litres/day). If you drink a lot of alcohol, reduction in the amount you drink, may help. Avoiding binge drinking and keep to within the recommended levels of alcohol which is 21 units/week for men and 14 units/week for women.

Medication : If you are taking any medicines, check whether they are cause of gout. An alternative medicine may be available. Your doctor will advise to have your blood pressure checked at least once a year. High blood pressure is more common in people with gout.

Physical activity : The risk of gout is lower in men who are more physically active. The physiotherapists and fitness experts at Unani can help to formulate a customized physical activity pattern based on your fitness level, lifestyle and health condition.
With the help of the above lifestyle changes, many people only have an attack of gout every now and then. All you may need is to have some anti-inflammatory pain killers on 'standby' to treat each attack. For some people, attacks occur more often. In this situation, you can take a medicine prescribed by your doctor to prevent attacks.

  3. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
      Have you read the pamphlet that comes with the pills? My experience has been that anti-b's cause a lot of side effects. If the side effect is something to worry about, it'll tell you.

      In either case, I would mention it to the doctor.

      I took Levaquin and it made me very jumpy, I had trouble getting to sleep, and my sleep was restless.

      It's good that you've gone veg - animal proteins are believed to contribute to stones.

  4. QUESTION:
    My friend is addicted to Soda (Pepsi). What are some really good ways to get her off the stuff?
    She has Kidney stones and Uric Acid conditions. we just read that soda is the main contributor and then she goes to the fridge and grabs the two liter; finished it off. Then she said "I drink a whole one of these a day!" She wont listen to me, and I think another addition to something way better and healthier would curb the soda diet. She also believes that the soda is helping her lose wieght.

    • ANSWER:
      ok soda makes u gain weight even the light one due to gasses

    Kidney stone or what?
    God Alan, ACAI berry is on the avoids for gout.

    • ANSWER:
      Sure sounds like it. You may well have uric acid stones. Most stones are calcium oxylate, but with your history, uric acid stones are a real possibility.

      Ask your doctor about a CT scan to look for stones.

  8. QUESTION:
    GOUT diet HELP??????
    I don't have gout but I went to a follow-up with my urologist after passing a Kidney stone and my urine test came back with very high Uric acid. I was advised to cut back my protien intake and I did research and asked my doctor again who stated that a deit for Gout would be ideal. Only problem is this seems very overwhelming to me without guidance. My question is this and please be specific. I need some good reliable resources for Gout diets. Preferably, good cookbook recommendations, helpful books, menu plans, or websites? I have only found lists of foods I shouldn't eat but that doesn't help me to devise a healthy and balanced diet.

  9. QUESTION:
    I need someone with medical understanding.?
    I am a 35 year old male. 6’1 320 lb… Married and a father of two children… I am sick almost all the time. Into my mid 20s I was an athlete. When I had an injury that the doctors called a soft tissue injury of the ankle… They treated this by throwing pain killers at me for 7 years until I saw a specialist who told me it was in fact acute gout. I was told additionally I have a genetic condition called hyperlipidima my body naturally makes to many lipids. I was told they were over 10,000. Needless to say they were amazed I was alive. I have normal to low blood pressure. My cholesterol was 280…and is now 200. last time I had it checked. I have an uncler where my esophagus meets my stomach. They gave me a generic form of nexium to fix it. And it did from what I can tell.
    I have this wonderful pain in my abdomen like all my organs get swollen and I also at that time double over in pain from cramps, as well as excessive gas and belching some kind of sulfur smelling something… It makes me vomit and have diarrhea to the point I lay on the bathroom floor and just hope if I was to fall asleep I would not wake up. I am tired, angry, cranky, depressed, and at a total loss. I talk to the doctor who tells me to losse weight. So, I try and well when I move it feels like 10000000 pins are slamming through my ankle so exercise is not easy. I can’t swim because I live in a cold weather region. I break bikes…flat out. I have lost 30 lb by diet modification. I cut out sugar and soda. I eat more veggies and less fats and red meat. Mostly because if I don’t I get a massive wave of pain from eating that stuff. I don’t sleep well… I have trouble breathing….I can’t stand for more then 2o min at a time…and if I do I can’t move for 3 days unless u take 800 mg anti-inflammation drugs. I have uric acid deposits in my feet. I take alloperinol for that when I can afford it. I can’t do this anymore. This needs to get fixed or I am a dead man. Oh and I have kidney stones…too…weee.

    • ANSWER:
      It sounds like you've taken the first step with your diet modifications. My experience with exercising while injured is that a recumbent bike at a commercial gym is the only way to go to start. If you have your doctor order it, the gym membership may be covered by insurance or at least tax deductible.

      For me, it was overwhelming looking at how much had to happen for me to get better. It wasn't just the weight loss. It was the illnesses and surgeries, etc. It just seemed hopeless. I was reminded that you eat an elephant one day at a time. All I had to do was show up every morning at the gym regardless of how I felt and just do SOMETHING! I felt better mentally but not physically for a while.

      The stomach stuff was paralyzing at times. I worked with a great gastroenterologist who did exploratory surgery and found my bowel had migrated over to the left side and was twisting on itself. I had to be persistent though. It took over a year to get that resolved.

      Had to have knees replaced. One was put in wrong and was replaced again. Then it was the shoulder. Then carpal tunnel. Now it's ankle fusion. (you might want to look into that)

      My point is, as long as you are doing something to try to make yourself better every single day, then you are fighting the good fight. Don't quit! Yes, I know it's painful and everyday won't feel like a good one, but just hang in there. One day at a time. I have to stay away from the pain meds too because of depression. That really sucks sometimes.

      I think you really want to get better or you wouldn't have changed your diet. Set another goal. A reasonable one. And make a move toward it. Sometimes it seems like two steps forward and one step back but that's better than the alternative.

      I wish you all the best!

  10. QUESTION:
    Desperately need serious help ... weird health problem?
    I am at my obesity first stage for 2 years and I know It's kind of serious. So i tried my best to exercise as much as I could. I cannot jog cos my body is too heavy and I walk a lot. I stay separately with my family and just rent a room where cooking is not allowed. So I've been eating outside food (mean unhealthy food) for 8 years!

    I have Uric acid for 2 years but I could feel now It's getting more serious. I tried to control my food but I can't due to some reasons and I LOVE eating. I don't have much friends and no family around here so in other words I lack of support from People around me which sometimes make me feel lazy and give up on diet and exercise. This year I could feel my knees (joint) pain when I squat and I'm not sure for what reason my lower leg around ankle pain . I tried to drink as much water as possible. Another problem is about kidney/ bladder. I always feel something pulling and very pain about 3-4 inch below my belly ? Is it prostate? uterus ? or what? STONES ? any comment?

    Another funny problem occur is I'm having sleeping problem for years. I don't have any stress and I'm very relax minded person. Sometime I can stay awake for 3 days without sleeping (just rest and close my eyes) I'm serious, no joking . I thought I'm having paranoia/ insomnia or whatever but doctor said I'm fine ? I am fat but I lack of blood ... and I don't have any chance to join any blood donation activities. If I could get better sleep the earliest I can sleep is 3 am and wake up at 7 am. Sometimes I sleep for 3 hours only for few months and I really feel like giving up my life ... It's freaking tired when I work without getting proper sleep. I tried many times to sleep early but end up I just wasting my time turning around the bed for hours. All tips I get from Internet I've tried but seems to be useless for me?

    Now I'm having problems like getting dark spots, dry skin, low energy and pimples on the face and my skin contour/ texture getting worse and I get fine lines under my eyes at age 25! All thanks to my sleeping disorder. Since June started to hate my throat cos when I sleep I couldn't breath so I have to sleep side ways. I thought due to my double chin but doctor said no problems and gave me some medicine. After few weeks it (my throat problem) came back 2 weeks and gone for 3 weeks and come back to visit me again (on and off). Then my hip keep on getting the skin swelling boil things (ulcerate/ abscess). My eyes keep on coming tears/ watery and it feel pains and hot. There was few times I feel like my rib cage pain and feels like pulling up and down. Sometimes my chest pain ? Or may be liver problem due to uric acid? My spine stiff and I always pain here and there and now due to the pain at my lower leg ankle , am I having diabetics? My grandma had it !! I've done last body check up on April this years and so far doctor said only have to watch out my Uric Acid but still no need to take any medicine. I tried to consume supplements (very good n expensive brand) but after eating I felt my heart pumping faster and I gain weight ... very uncomfortable, then I stop taking any of it .... Am i alien? I'm sick keep on seeing doctor and pay for stupid unnecessary medication and consultation fee and doctors/ clinics are doing business sometime I don't need the stupid cream I also have to pay for it. I think I'm going to die.

    Any idea how to overcome all these ?

    Thanks for your advise.
    My obesity problem caused serious problem only for Uric Acid. Other matters (especially sleeping problem) have been occurred before I started overweight. I was size 11 last 3 years.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi - as you mention prostate, I take it that you are a guy.

      ALL of your symptoms are weight related.

      Consuming supplements and buying creams cannot help you in any way, until you understand this simple formulae:

      *overeating + underexercising = obesity / obesity = ill health and early death*

      You have sleep apnoea due to the flab at the back of your throat choking off your air supply when you try and sleep.

      You cannot sleep properly because you are inactive and because your poor body is trying to digest large amounts of unhealthy food.

      Your skin is swollen and boggy due to too much fat and water-retention caused by lack of exercise and too much salty processed foods. Inevitably this will lead to ulceration, or the lesions of diabetes.

      ALL of the organs in your body are now coated with a thick layer of yellow glutinous fat. They cannot help but give you symptoms such as those that you describe.

      Your joints are giving up because they cannot support your weight.

      Your facial skin is coarse and spotty because of the lack of good healthy food and the overeating of greasy fast foods.

      You need desperately to get to a Doctor (change your Doctor if you need to), and go on a healthy eating plan suitable for you.

      But this cannot and will not work until you face up to the fact that the thing that you love most in the world, your food, is killing you.

      Good luck for the future.

Types Of Kidney Stones

Written By: admin - Aug• 11•12

Calcium stones

This is the major type of stone found in 50% of the people who suffer from kidney stone disorder. Kidney stones normally found in persons who are taking excessive calcium particularly in pill form. People who are suffering from recurrent stone formation in kidney are more likely affected calcium oxalate stones.

Calcium and vitamins in pill form tend to aggravate kidney stone formation.

We all know that vitamin D is essential in absorbing calcium. This is good for bones. But excessive absorption of vitamin D will only harm your health by producing Calcium stones.

If you are diagnosed with these types of stones, then you should limit the consumption of dairy products, meat and poultry. Instead start taking low calcium high fiber diet.

Allopurinal is proven to be the most effective drug for calcium stone sufferers. However if the drug shows any side effects in any of the patients, then he/ she should stop consuming the medications.

Uric Acid Stones

Uric acid stones are another common type found in kidney stone sufferers. This will occur when the urine has a high concentration of uric acid or the uric acid is present in such a form which is easily dissolvable in water.

People having high risk of uric acid stones

People who receive Chemotherapy treatment for curing cancer have more concentration of uric acid in urine than normal people.

People who live in hot and arid areas and one who do not consume atleast eight to ten glasses of water may have the chance of frequent dehydration. They will lead to low volume of urine output and thereby increase the risk of uric acid stones.

People who have inflammatory bowel disorders or those who have the problem of chronic diarrhea have the problem of low pH urine and low volume of urine. This in turn will increase the stone formation.

Symptoms of Uric acid stones

The person suffering from uric acid stones will experience extreme pain and will also notice blood in urine like any other types of kidney stones. Hence a complete diagnosis will only help in recognizing the type of kidney stone. Normally uric acid stones will not be seen in X-ray. A CT scan and 24 hours urine test is necessary to identify the stone.

Treatment for uric acid stones

Uric acid stones though cause severe pain are not difficult to remove. Drinking adequate fluid along with increase in urine pH level is sufficient to pass uric acid stones. Normally shock wave treatments are not required for removing this type of stone.

How to prevent uric acid stones

Taking more than 2 liters of water daily will help in preventing uric acid stones. Fresh fruits will help in raising the urine pH level by supplying potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate to the body.

If you do not get effective results in removing stones by the above simplest approach, then your doctor will advice you to take allopurinol drugs.

  7. QUESTION:
    What type of kidney stone can not be detected through x-ray? How about through sonogram?
    I'm trying to determine what it's made of because treatment depends on what it is.
    It didn't show up in the x-ray and wasn't noticeable on ultrasound.

    • ANSWER:
      There are four types of kidney stones, which are Calcium Oxalate or Phosphate, Sturvite, Uric acid and Cystine stones. X-Ray can detect Calcium, Sturvite and Cystine stones. X-ray will NOT detect Uric Acid stones, because they are radiolucent. Ultrasound can detect all of these types of stones. Ultrasound can miss small stones and stones in the ureter connecting the kidney and the bladder. Calcium stones account for 80% of all kidney stones and can be detected by both CT and Ultrasound if the size is large enough. CT scan stone protocol is the preferred diagnostic test for kidney stones, because it is more reliable than X-ray or Ultrasound. The stones can also be collected by straining the urine and sending the stone to the lab for analysis. They type of stone is usually not determined unless a person has had a kidney stone more than once. Regarding your case, your stone was likely too small to be detected with ultrasound and maybe X-ray. It is also possible that your symptoms were not due to a kidney stone if there is no diagnostic test that shows you have stones.

      You are correct that the treatment of kidney stones does vary depending on the type of stone present. All people with kidney stones should drink plenty of fluids to dilute the urine and prevent further stone formation. Good luck to you.

  8. QUESTION:
    Are kidney stones a form of chemical precipitation?
    hey =D

    I heard somewhere that the formation of kidney stones are a type of chemical precipitation (something to do with a Calcium build-up?) Is this true?

    TIA,
    Vallie xx

    • ANSWER:
      You are correct, they are formed from precipitation, mostly of calcium oxalate, although some are formed from precipitated uric acid.

  9. QUESTION:
    I chipped a tooth while chewing on a kidney stone. What type of insurance will cover this?
    Wasn’t sure if this would be a Dental or Medical claim. I’m not positive if it was my own kidney stone or one that somebody else passed, if that matters.

    • ANSWER:
      You should place a claim to your home insurance, under the "force majeure" clause.

      This is a common dilemma, especially among those with a Cajun background:

      The understanding of force majeure in French law is similar to that of international law and vis major. For a defendant to invoke force majeure in French law, the event proposed as force majeure must pass three tests:

      Externality
      The defendant must have nothing to do with the event's happening.
      Unpredictability
      If the event could be foreseen, the defendant is obligated to have prepared for it.[3] Being unprepared for a foreseeable event leaves the defendant culpable. This standard is very strictly applied:
      CE 9 April 1962, "Chais d’Armagnac": The Conseil d'Etat adjudged that, since a flood had occurred 69 years before the one that caused the damage at issue, the latter flood was predictable.
      Administrative tribunal of Grenoble, 19 June 1974, "Dame Bosvy": An avalanche was judged to be predictable since another had occurred around 50 years before.
      Irresistibility
      The consequences of the event must have been unpreventable.
      Other events that are candidates for force majeure in French law are hurricanes and earthquakes. Force majeure is a cause of relief from responsibility that is applicable throughout French law.

      From the above excerpt, I feel confident that, since you have no prior history of kidney stone injury, your claim will be accepted and paid in full. There is little difference between kidney stone attacks and hurricanes.

    23 weeks pregnant...kidney infection/stones?
    Back in 2009 when i was pregnant with my daughter i had a kidney infection, it was treated at the hospital but after a while i started getting sharp pains where my left kidney is, i went to my family dr they took a urine sample and it was normal. The pain still happened on and off. Now i'm 23 weeks pregnant and a few weeks ago i had a bladder infection and the last day of the infection i had a terrible pain in my right kidney then i went "pee" and it looked like a super small stone type thing came out, and the pain stopped in my kidney and bladder. Last night i had a super sharp pain in my left which lasted maybe 5 minutes before leaving, and this morning i experienced this as well. My question is do you think if i possibly had a kidney stone is this something that will just finish passing by itself? I was suppose to see a kidney specialist after my first baby but i didn't.

    • ANSWER:
      I think u should go to the doctors because your pregnant and that can affect the baby.

  13. QUESTION:
    Brushite (cal phosphate) kidney stones?
    I am a 36 yo white female suffering from recurrent brushite stones for the past 5 years. I have done numerous 24 hour catches, full blood work-ups examining chemical makeups in my body. I drink tons of water with fresh, organic lemon and still produce the stones. I have just recently started a low oxalate diet regime as well. Does anyone out there produce this type of stone? If so, do you have any prevention tips?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Angela. I have been a chronic stone former for more than 25 years. In my case, they have been a byproduct of undiagnosed Celiac Disease (CD). CD damages the lining of the gut creating a 'leaky gut'. The leaky gut allows large amounts of oxalate to be absorbed. Oxalate drives the formation of most kidney stones. Be sure your docs have tested you for this condition (note: you do not need GI symptoms to have this disease - many celiac patients are 'asymptomatic').

      Brushite (calcium phosphate) stones occur with a high urine pH. Citrate (e.g. potassium citrate supplements) is often prescribed for most stone formers because it helps to prevent the formation and the attachment of the stones to the kidney. In your case, citrate (including citric acid in citrus fruits) is contraindicated because it also raises the urine pH which can contribute to your type of stone formation.

      For high pH stone formers supplementation with Inositol Hexaphophate (IP6, AKA phytate) is the 'weapon' of choice. It helps to prevent stone formation at high (greater than 6.5) pH levels.

      Your healthcare professional can order IP6 from Pure Encapsulations, a nutritional supplement company that only sells their products through professionals.

      I found a report in the medical literature of a case of calcium phosphate stone formation resulting from cadmium toxicity. Cadmium is a common heavy metal (most people have some of it in their body) that is toxic to the kidneys. It may be a good idea to have your docs test you for heavy metal toxicities (arsenic and mercury can also damage the kidneys).

      In summary, 1) avoid foods and supplements (e.g. citrate and citrus fruits) that can dramatically increase your urine pH [you can monitor your pH with pH paper - you want to keep it below 6.5], 2) supplement with IP6 to inhibit stone formation at a high pH, 3) get tested for Celiac disease, and 4) get tested for heavy metal toxicity.

      Best wishes and good luck.

  14. QUESTION:
    What type of Dr treats kidney stones?
    What type of Dr treats kidney stones

    • ANSWER:
      urologist

  15. QUESTION:
    What are the organs of stone formation?
    kidney stones is a type of it.but there are many types of stones.i got about only one. please help me to gather info about other types of stones formed in humans

    • ANSWER:
      In medicine, these "stones" are called "calculi".

      There are five main types of calculi that can form in the body:
      1. Calculi in the renal system (kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra) can be of any one of several compositions, including mixed.
      2. Calculi in the nasal passages (rhinoliths) are rare.
      3. Calculi in the gastrointestinal tract (enteroliths) can be enormous. Individual enteroliths weighting many pounds have been reported in horses.
      4. Salivary duct calculus
      5. Tonsillolith

  16. QUESTION:
    what type of medication allows the kidney stones to breakdown and pass?

    • ANSWER:
      When the stone passes, the urine should be strained and the stone saved and tested to determine the type.

      Drink at least 6 - 8 glasses of water per day to produce a large amount of urine. Some people might need to get fluids through a vein (intravenous).

      Pain relievers can help control the pain of passing the stones (renal colic). For severe pain, you may need to take narcotic pain killers or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen.
      Depending on the type of stone, your doctor may prescribe medicine to decrease stone formation or help break down and remove the material that is causing the stone. Medications can include:

      Allopurinol (for uric acid stones)
      Antibiotics (for struvite stones)
      Diuretics
      Phosphate solutions
      Sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate (which make the urine more alkaline)
      Surgery is usually needed if:

      The stone is too large to pass on its own
      The stone is growing
      The stone is blocking urine flow and cuasing an infection or kidney damage
      Today, most treatments are much less invasive than in the past.

      Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy is used to remove stones slightly smaller than a half an inch that are located near the kidney. This method uses ultrasonic waves or shock waves to break up stones. Then, the stones leave the body in the urine.
      Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is used for large stones in or near the kidney, or when the kidneys or surrounding areas are incorrectly formed. The stone is removed with an endoscope that is inserted into the kidney through a small opening.
      Ureteroscopy may be used for stones in the lower urinary tract.
      Standard open surgery (nephrolithotomy) may be needed if other methods do not work or are not possible.

  17. QUESTION:
    What type of liquid is good for kidney stones?

    • ANSWER:
      There is nothing that will get rid of one that's big enough to hurt, but to prevent them you can drink lemonade. As long as it has lots of real lemon juice in it, the acid found in lemons (not limes or oranges) actually breaks down the calcium and oxalates that are just starting to stick together. My urologist told me about the studies on it and suggested I drink a glass of it a day.

      I'm sure it's not proven for sure and might not prevent all types of stones, but it can't hurt to try, right?

  18. QUESTION:
    cystoscopy and stent removal after kidney stones...?
    Hi I have an unusual and slightly personal question....
    (background)..I recently had an operation to have kidney stones removed and they had to put a stent in my Uretha tube which stayed there for 5 weeks. I went to have the stent removed which should take about 5 mins max.

    They placed a camera through the end of my penis and a small rod with a claw so they could grab one end of the stent and pull it through and out of my penis... unfortunately (for me) the stent was only a few centermeters out one end when it got stuck... after alot of what I would call "YANKING" and pulling and what felt like "Ramming" of the camera back in and out about 4 times! and much gel and anesthic down there, they finally got it out after about 15/20mins (yes ouch). the reason for it getting stuck was allegedly that more stones/crystally type things formed around the stent making it lodged (probably scrathed its way out aswell)... anyways to my question....
    I understand that there has been burning when I pee, etc as infections are common with this precedure and itt will naturaly burn a few days after anyways... but is it natural to have extreme pain on the underneath of my penis (under the spongy uretha) when I get even the slightest erection... excuse the termanolgy here but even when its under a semi im just get this awful pain .. like its broken or something? is this common... do you think it is just a lil pain from them man-handling me for 20mins or could this be serious damage ?? It doesnt hurt when its soft and it seems to have a curvature to it when its is slightly firm (which wasnt there before)???? and the pain is only on the underneath of the penis? sorry for the essay but as you can imaging ..for a mid 20's guy .. the slightly firm bit is causing me alot of problems (PAIN) (lighter note...especially in the mornings). Anyways any advise would be good thank you.

    • ANSWER:
      When they try to yank the stent from your ureter, it is but natural that there will be some abrasions all along the tract. So, it is normal to have burning sensation while passing urine. However, if they have struggled to pull the stent out, they might have caused something more than just abrasion. Watch for the stream when you are peeing. If it is a steady stream without you straining much, then there is nothing to worry. However, if you are struggling to maintain a steady stream, then your urethra may have been damaged. Pain while having erection is a normal phenomenon. it is like stretching a wound in your arm when it is in healing stages; more you stretch,more is the pain. I hope that makes some sense to you.

  19. QUESTION:
    why do they put vitamin D in calcium and and what is the type of calcium that doesn't cause kidney stones?
    my friend told me there's a calcium that won't cause kidney stones

    and why is vitamin d in every calcium supplement do they have to go together for the body to absorb the calcium? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      I don't think there is more than one type of calcium lol. Calcium is calcium. Yes Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb the calcium. I wouldn't worry to much about kidney stones, unless you are taking an overabundant amount of calcium or vitamin D, or have some underlying health problem that would cause them. Taking a normal dose of calcium and vitamin D is, in most cases, a good thing.

  20. QUESTION:
    Does stress cause kidney stones to pass?
    Would undergoing any type of stress, be a reason for a kidney stone to pass; when found that the stone has passed? Facts show how Kidney stones may occur, but nothing really giving a reason for the untreated/un noticed stubborn kidney stone to decide to move or even pass?

    • ANSWER:
      Not related at all.
      Stress brings on anxiety...Does not cure anything.

  21. QUESTION:
    What can I do for kidney stones?
    I am only 8 weeks pregnant, and I went to the hospital two days ago for a UTI. I had them test, but it came back negative for all bladder infections of all types. I was stunned and they didn't look any further into it, they just sent me home. It is throbbing and I have to pee all the time. It feels aa little dull compared to all the other kidney stones I have had, but this could be the only thing. What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
      WHen you are 8 weeks pregnant (well.. when you are pregnant in general, really) your growing uterus is pressing on your bladder, and can make you feeling like peeing more. Pregnant women are more prone to infections, and I would assume your hospital sent your urine off for culture to check for organisms (bugs).

      If you've got a history of kidney stones, and this feels like stones, then you should drink more water and hope that it flushes away. If the pain persists, your doctor may arrange for a renal scan to look for signs of your ureters (part of your urinary tract) dilating more than usual. Doctors are unlikely to treat your stones with medication or ultrasound therapy whilst you are pregnant.

      Saying that, with stones, the pain is usually sudden and intermittent, and very sore.

      If your symptoms persist, ask your doctor to resend your urine sample for culture testing again - and make sure you collect urine from the FIRST pee you have in the morning - as it tends not to be too dilute (compared to a sample taken later in the day, when you might have drunk enough water to dilute it)

  22. QUESTION:
    Is there a correllation between kidney stones, gallstones, and any type of cancer?
    A little background. I'm 20, female, healthy and active. I have had kidney stones since I was 18, and I currently have a 17mm gallstone in my gallbladder (first time). I've had moderate to severe localized abdominal pain. I had an ultrasound about 2 weeks ago and it said I have a gallstone and that my liver looked "okay" (what my dr. said.). My pain: my back, obviously my gallbladder and kidneys, and pain occasionally in my loins. I also had some blood work done, and it said that my urine had a little blood (my period did not start until 2 days later) and that there was bacteria present. I've had Urinary Tract Infections before, so I know that that wasn't it. Please help.

    • ANSWER:
      There can be. They are usually familial. Called MEN syndromes. Also you may wish to have your DR. Make sure your calcium levels are normal and also ask what kind of kidney stones they were? Hope this helped.

  23. QUESTION:
    Does Coke/Pop cause kidney stones?
    Hey,

    Now, i have been drinking Coke my entire life. Well, almost. I drink only a bit, but I used to be crazy and drink 3 or 4 cans a week. I began to expirence lower back pain, and realized it was my kidneys. I was worried I had kidney stones. No problem. Now, It was th end of the year, so I had about 2 cans of coke and a half a can of Sprite the last week. Now my right kidney hurts. Just a little, no hard pains. This has happen to me before, but I just want to know, what is it? Does Coke cause kidney stones. Also, what are the symptoms of kidney stones?

    Please excuse my typing as my "Shift" key broke.

    :)

    • ANSWER:
      kidney stones are caused by calcium build-up in the urinary tract. this could be from drinking too much milk, sodium. Soda drinks are a tough substance for the kidneys to "clean" up. If one drinks a lot of sodas they should counteract that by drinking more h2o.
      you just may need a good kidney flush with some cranberry juice or aloe vera juice.

      Some people share that this is the closest a man can feel that a woman would have when having a baby from labor pains.

  24. QUESTION:
    Is there a such thing as a "bath tub" type thing that breaks up kidney stones?
    is there a bath that hospitals use for patients to sit in to get rid of kidney stones that are lodged in the kidney

    • ANSWER:
      Its called extracoporeal shockwave lithotripsy, and is usually done under mild sedation.

      There is a newer version where the patient lies on a special bed with a silicon ring in the middle that is filled with water, and the shockwaves are delivered through that. It is more powerful than the bath tub, so the patients are put completely out with general anaesthesia.

      Both types may take more than one treatment to completely break up stones - depends on size and composition of the stone.

  26. QUESTION:
    What would happen if you had the urge to pee / poop but you had kidney stones? Explain.?
    If you had the urge to pee / poop, but you had kidney stones, would you roll on the floor yelling and screaming like an infant for help? How painful would it be to hold it in or when it slips out? Would you be hospitalized? Tell me what you know! But be specific! No source links, no simple answers, and no unanswered responses. Those type of answers will not be rated best answer.

    • ANSWER:
      I was in the hospital when I sprained my ancle and the guy in the room next to me kept talking about how bad his kidney stone hurted and when he finally did pee, he was literally screaming. So, I am assuming it is pretty bad depending on the size of it. Even if it was a small one I am sure it would hurt. The 'walls' in the hospital we went to were just kind of curtains. Thats why I could hear and I know.

  27. QUESTION:
    I have a question about Kidney stones?
    I went to the emergency room last night and found out I had kidney stones. I have a 4mm stone.

    My question is they told me to follow up with a urologist. I have no insurance. Is there really any need to follow up since I was told that it was going to have to pass anyway. It's hard for me to afford all these medical bills. I can't think of anything different that a urologist is going to be able to tell me.

    The emergency room did a ct scan and found everything to be fine except for inflammation in the urethra and the 4mm stone. The doctor said it was small enough to pass. What is a specialist going to do differently in the follow-up? Why is noone doing anything? They keep saying that it will pass and do nothing else, but subscribe pain medication.

    What are the best types of fluids I should now start drinking and Is their any comfortable position to get in during one of the pain attacks? I could not sit still. I was hurting so bad and never want to go through it again.

    • ANSWER:
      Lemonade made with lemon juice--not fresh lemons--has been shown to reduce the formation of stones. So it is a good idea to drink about a two or three quaarts of this throughout the day. Please use a sugar subsititue when making it because sugar is not good for your kidneys. Or put some in your regular hot tea if you are a tea drinker.

      An herb from the rain forest, Chanca Piedra, has been used to relax the kidneys so that they do not spasm as much. On this note, you should avoid foods known to cause inflamation. See the list below. If you keep your carbs to about 72 grams a day it should work too. You feel will great (assuming the stone is quite) in 3 or 4 days.

      As to the best position? Well, I would make sure I can hold on to something when going to the bathroom just in case you get an attack.

      Good luck.

    Has anyone had kidney stones during pregnancy?
    If so, what types of treatment did you have done, especially those people who got them ealry in pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
      Not during pregnancy ...thank God, but I do get them frequently so I discussed this with my doctor..You can go to the ER, they can give you Morphine if the pain is sever enough..this is supposed to be ok and not hurt the baby..Or if you have had them before you can kind of Gage how your body is feeling and judge from there...I can usually tell where they are in relation to my kidney region, ureters, bladder etc...so you may know when you're going to pass them..Good news is I have talked to several women who said kidney stones were worse than childbirth..I guess that makes me feel a little better...Good Luck!!!

  30. QUESTION:
    Anyone who has had a kidney infection/kidney problems.?

  31. QUESTION:
    Kidney stones? anyone who has had them or knows about them?
    Anyone that has had kidney stones or knows about them. Can you have a 'lead up' to a kidney stone attack. I have had extreme episodes of kidney pain, lasting form 1 minute to 15 minutes for the last few months. The pain seems to be getting more frequent and lasting longer. I sometimes also have red/tea coloured urine and bladder pain/aching just before urination, but no pain or burning with urination. I wonder about the kidney area pain as everything I've read and been told suggests that you have the extreme pain and it doesn't stop and you would pass a stone or have it removed. Is it possible to have tiny kidney stones hat could cause this type of on going pain and I don't know that I am actually passing them? or could it be a lead up to a big attack of a kidney stone/s? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      You really need to see a physician. Your symptoms sound serious. Here is some important information that should help you.

      http://www.essortment.com/all/kidneystones_rclg.htm
      Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of enduring a kidney stone attack will tell you exactly how painful this condition can be. In fact, the pain is most often compared with the pangs of natural childbirth. This is no exaggeration or wishful thinking. The stabbing and shooting pains that accompany a major kidney stone attack can bring you literally to your knees, unable to even drive yourself to proper medical attention. While major pain-killers such as Demerol can do wonders for the immediate discomfort, a victim of a kidney stone attack must still face days of intravenous fluid treatments and possible surgical intervention before getting substantial relief. A permanent change in diet and lifestyle is often required, and the patient still faces the chance of several reoccurances over a lifetime. Prevention is the true key to avoiding serious kidney stone attacks, but heredity and gender are usually working against those who have a predisposition to kidney disease.

      So what are the warning signs and symptoms of a kidney stone attack? It's difficult to be specific, because you may experience any combination of some general symptoms. Some kidney stone sufferers may feel a dull, non-descript pain in their lower back for days, while others are suddenly crippled by extremely sharp pains. These symptoms and warning signs are intended to be a general layman's guide to self-diagnosing a possible kidney stone attack, not a substitute for proper medical attention. If you feel pains that are unrelenting and strong, seek a doctor's care as soon as possible. Don't wait until the actual attack begins- a simple in-office urine test can usually diagnose a kidney stone condition long before the actual attack.

      Here are the most common symptoms and warning signs of a kidney stone attack:
      1. Medical history and gender. Although women are just as likely to develop kidney problems
      , the majority of kidney stone sufferers are men. Some researchers believe that a family history of kidney problems can significantly increase your own chances of developing kidney stones. Check out any known family medical history that indicates a predisposition to kidney stones. Forewarned can be forearmed. If you know that kidney stone attacks run in the family, make sure you use good preventive measures, such as increasing your non-sugared, non-caffeine fluid intake and avoiding excessive dairy consumption, especially at night. Never intentionally work your body into a state of severe dehydration, which may occur if you work long hours at a physically demanding job or spend too much time in the heat. Always take plenty of water breaks when working excessive hours. Those who are prone to kidney stone attacks should never be far from two things- a good water supply and a bathroom. Withholding urination for an extended amount of time will work against you in the long run.

      2. Dull, 'toothachy' pain originating in the lower back or pelvis. This may be your first indication that something serious is developing.

      The level of pain may be continuous, or it may come and go in waves. It will rarely disappear entirely. You may take an analgesic tablet or two, expecting the pain to dissipate. After a few hours or even days, the pain will most likely increase in degree and be more definite in its location. Some victims feel a definite tension in the kidney area, as if their urine was trying to get past a blockage. You may even feel a 'squirting' sensation internally, as fluids try to get past the blockage. Even if the pain is tolerable, it should never be left unchecked.

      3. Fever, disorientation, general 'blahs'. Along with this dull pain in the lower back, many victims experience a general sense of disorientation and fatigue. You may feel feverish or chilled. Your thought process may become cloudier, and your energy level dramatically lower. An actual fever may or may not be present, but you still experience the same nausea and grogginess you might associate with a serious cold or stomach bug. Walking becomes more and more difficult, and the pain makes everyday tasks nearly impossible. You may experience trouble reaching above your head, or recovering from a bent position.

      4. Signs of blood in the urine. If you can, observe any urine you secrete during this time of distress. You may be able to see actual blood traces in the urine, or the urine itself may be an unusual color.

      If your urine is a deep orange color, you are most likely dehydrated. Any blood in the urine is cause for alarm. In combination, a dark-colored urine associated with sharp pains in the kidney region should be a red flag for you to seek help immediately. For less severe symptoms, you should dramatically increase your intake of water and/or cranberry juice. Make a (see the site for the rest)

  32. QUESTION:
    How to get dog to eat prescription food?
    My chihuahua was just diagnosed with kidney stones. Aside from the surgical option, my vet said that some types of kidney stones can be dissolved in 3-6 months by eating only Hill Prescription Diet S/D. I served it to my dog today, but he will not eat it. I feel sad for him, because he is signaling to me that he wants to eat, but he will not touch this food. I normally serve him regular dry kibble daily and small amounts of wet Beneful a few times per week. This prescription food is canned, but it looks dry and gross with no texture. Any ideas on how I can get him to eat it, or do I just need to make him "starve" until he is desperate enough to eat?

    • ANSWER:
      Unfortunately, s/d is not the most palatable diet from Hills. However, it is important that you stick with the prescription food - it is a prescription and contrary to what most people on here think, if there is proof (ie. radiographs) then your doctor is doing what is best for the pet not looking for some kickback (Hills doesn't having a kick back for putting an animal on a prescription diet, or any real kick backs that I know about).

      You probably do need to slowly introduct the food and not just give the s/d. Most likely, you can not add anything after you've made the switch (ie the gravy someone else mentioned) because the food works by altering the pH of your dog's urine to desolve the crystals. Adding other things to the diet unfortunately can make it so the food isn't working at all and surgery will become your only option. Make the transition over a week and if you are still having problems, here are a few options.

      1. Ask your vet about another diet. Hills is only one of three (I don't count the Iams/Eukanuba brand since not many vets carry these prescription diets) prescription diets. Purina and Royal Canin both make urinary stone disolving diets. I, personally, see a lot of success from Royal Canin's Urinary SO. Your dog may accept one of these better than s/d.

      2. There is a homemade version of s/d. You'll have to ask your veterinarian (or email me if he/she doesn't have it and you have to choose this route) for the recipe, but there is a home made diet version of s/d that your dog may take better. The recipe is made by Hills to mirror the action of s/d. They have a lot of home cooking recipes for thier prescription diets which is very useful for a picky eating dog.

      3. Go to surgery. Your vet didn't just look at your dog and say, hey, I'll make some money and sell this food because I can. Your vet found a legitamate problem and has given you your options: a prescription food or surgery. I'll admit some vets are all about making money off the client, but this is the same path we offer our clients so its not like its uncommon. (This is pretty much written towards all these people on here who think the vet is the devil)

      I hope you can get your dog to eat the food and that it works for you. I've seen some remarkable results with using a stone desolving food so it is definately worth the effort so keep trying. BTW, in case someone suggests this, there is no kibble form of s/d, only canned. Good luck!

      PS. remember to measure the number of weeks the dr. wanted your dog on the food starting when your dog is completely on the diet, not including the days you transition. also, treats are a big no no on these prescription diets because they can counteract the food! so you'll need to get him on the diet and nothing else.

  33. QUESTION:
    2mm kidney stone now 1.5 mm after 2 months, also doesn't show up on ultrasound?
    If a kidney stone doesn't show up on ultrasound, does that tell you what type of stone it is?

    Also, this stone has been in my kidney for 2 months, I have no idea if this is causing all of my weird back/muscle aches in my torso. Sometimes I feel nausea throughout the day. A recent ct scan w/ contrast showed the same stone, but they reported it at 1.5mm now. They keep saying that the stone would not cause any symptoms, but I have not been doing well for over 2 months, I'm 27. Has anyone had a small stone that did cause symptoms?

    • ANSWER:
      I have not had a stone as I take apple cider vinegar:

      In Herbs of the Earth by Mary Carse, she lists under stones and gravel in the urinary system pertaining to kidneys and the bladder, that these are rare where apple cider or vinegar are a staple of the diet. (I note that this reference does not state whether the vinegar needs to be apple cider vinegar, but the brands in the health food aisle are less processed.

      The woman I work for now, says her daughter passed a kidney stone (identified by a doctor) after taking apple cider vinegar. The Braggs brand found in the health food aisle suggests to take 2 teaspoons in water with honey 3 times daily and there is another organic brand called Spectrum.

      +++++++++++++++++++++++++

      In In Apple Cider Vinegar Health System by the Braggs 1985 or 34th printing, it states on p 21:

      A large number of kidney stones are of the type that can be dissolved with cider vinegar.

      Use cider vinegar freely on salads consisting of cabbage, carrots, celery, beet root, tomatoes, green onions, parsley, cucumbers. Eat prunes, raisins, apples, at the same meal with the cider vinegar on the salad.

      I hope this helps.

  34. QUESTION:
    Can I take Glucosamine with multivitamin and Fish Oils?
    Can I take Glucosamine with multivitamin and Fish Oils? As in is it okay to take all three pills a day? Multivitaims are 2 a day, fish oils are 3 a day and Glucosamine 3 times a day. Will this cause any problems for me? Kidney stones or any type of inner infections!!

    • ANSWER:
      You should have no problems at all. There is a study showing that fish oil combined with glucosamine is more effective than glucosamine alone. [1] In a multivitamin there are fat soluble vitamins that need the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. It would seem that the supplements that you are taking are all working together in a synergistic fashion.

      To my knowledge there is no risk of infections or kidney stones from taking those combination of supplements. The safety factor of supplements in general is clear. "There was not even one death caused by a dietary supplement in 2009, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System." [2]

  35. QUESTION:
    Can antibiotics get rid of kidney stones?
    I have a friend that has been experiencing pain in her back as well as pain on urination and blood in her urine.She just had a kub ultrasound done yesterday. The Doctor said there was nothing of concern showing up in her kidneys other than 1 small kidney stone. The doctor told my friend that the stone could easily be gotten rid of by taking antibiotics (which she has already done twice prior to the ultrasound with no improvement). Could it be that she was not given the proper antibiotic for removing kidney stones but one for UTI instead (which was the preliminary diagnosis)? I myself have a very large kidney stone in my left kidney which my urologist has been monitoring for the past 4 years with an annualy Xray. It has never given me the least bit of trouble and I have never seen blood in my urine. If it's true that kidney stones can be gotten rid of with antibiotics why wouldn't my urologist have already prescribedthem for my stone? He said the only solution is to do one of 2 procedures, one which involves going up through the urethra and into the kidney breaking up the stone into small pieces that would still have to be passed with urination ...VERY painful! The other choice would be something called lithotripsy which is a laser type method used to break the stone up also and the small pieces would still have to be passed through urination ..... again VERY PAINFUL!
    My question is NOT how to avoid getting kidney stones but whether antibiotics can get rid of them.

    • ANSWER:
      My son used to have kidney stones and even had the sound procedure to break up one. He didn't like that much. Now when he has pain, he drinks Aloe Vera juice and it seems to dissolve the stones. Don't know if it works for others but it did for him. Worth a try, even tho Aloe is slimy and not very tasty.

  41. QUESTION:
    What is the best type of calcium supplement to take?
    I've heard that calcium carbonate is not that good, and that it may cause kidney stones. Is there one type that is better? I need supplements because I can not tolerate dairy products, and I'm in my 30's. Any advice would be appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
      You can just drink calcium fortified soy milk or orange juice. They contain about 30% of your required daily calcium intake. It can also be found in green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals, and tofu. It is best to get it from your diet. If you do take a supplement you need 1000mg/day, but you don't want to take it all at once because your body will not absorb it all at once. If you can take 4 250mg supplements throughout the day you will probably get the most calcium absorption.

    sex during kidney problem?
    hi
    i want to ask that if someone has (boy/girl) kidney problem, like kidney pain, stone in kidney or any type of kidney problem. then in this condition he/she can do seX, whats effect?for boy or girl?

    • ANSWER:
      If you have an infection of the urinary tract, then the other person could catch it possibly. Otherwise, it depends on where the stone is and how big it is whether it might get "kicked around" during sex. Mostly it depends on whether the other person feels well enough to have sex. More of a comfort level and respect for the other person who is sick issue.

  43. QUESTION:
    Calcium Oxalate?
    I'm doing a school chemistry project, and I'm just wondering, how does oxalate bond with calcium in kidneys to produce kidney stones? What type of chemical bond is it?

    • ANSWER:
      calcium and oxalate are both ions - the calcium is a positive ion and the oxalate is a negative - so they form an ionic compound by ionic bonding

      calcium oxalate is insoluble in water and when formed in the kidney makes kidney stones which block fluid flow through the kidney and can be very painful

  44. QUESTION:
    Kidney stones?
    What are the causes of kidney stones.The person who suffers from them periodically is on several drugs for Ischaemic Heart Desease,High Blood Pressure and Diabetes type 2.
    Drugs include Bezafibrate,Lisinopril,Metformin,Aspirin and Simvastatin.Could any of these be the cause.He already drinks lots of filtered water.Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
      A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract. Normally, urine contains chemicals that prevent or inhibit the crystals from forming. These inhibitors do not seem to work for everyone, however, so some people form stones. If the crystals remain tiny enough, they will travel through the urinary tract and pass out of the body in the urine without being noticed.

      Kidney stones may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common type of stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. These chemicals are part of a person’s normal diet and make up important parts of the body, such as bones and muscles.

      A less common type of stone is caused by infection in the urinary tract. This type of stone is called a struvite or infection stone. Another type of stone, uric acid stones, are a bit less common, and cystine stones are rare.

      For unknown reasons, the number of people in the United States with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years. In the late 1970s, less than 4 percent of the population had stone-forming disease. By the early 1990s, the portion of the population with the disease had increased to more than 5 percent. Caucasians are more prone to develop kidney stones than African Americans. Stones occur more frequently in men. The prevalence of kidney stones rises dramatically as men enter their 40s and continues to rise into their 70s. For women, the prevalence of kidney stones peaks in their 50s. Once a person gets more than one stone, other stones are likely to develop.

      Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract and blocks the flow of urine. Typically, a person feels a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side in the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.

      If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the narrow ureter try to squeeze the stone into the bladder. As the stone moves and the body tries to push it out, blood may appear in the urine, making the urine pink. As the stone moves down the ureter, closer to the bladder, a person may feel the need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation during urination.

      If fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms, an infection may be present. In this case, a person should contact a doctor immediately.

      Sometimes “silent” stones—those that do not cause symptoms—are found on x rays taken during a general health exam. If the stones are small, they will often pass out of the body unnoticed. Often, kidney stones are found on an x ray or ultrasound taken of someone who complains of blood in the urine or sudden pain. These diagnostic images give the doctor valuable information about the stone’s size and location. Blood and urine tests help detect any abnormal substance that might promote stone formation.

      The doctor may decide to scan the urinary system using a special test called a computerized tomography (CT) scan or an intravenous pyelogram (IVP). The results of all these tests help determine the proper treatment.

A second 24-hour urine collection may be needed to determine whether the prescribed treatment is working.

      Fortunately, surgery is not usually necessary. Most kidney stones can pass through the urinary system with plenty of water—2 to 3 quarts a day—to help move the stone along. Often, the patient can stay home during this process, drinking fluids and taking pain medication as needed. The doctor usually asks the patient to save the passed stone(s) for testing. It can be caught in a cup or tea strainer used only for this purpose.

      Lifestyle Changes
      A simple and most important lifestyle change to prevent stones is to drink more liquids—water is best. Someone who tends to form stones should try to drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 quarts of urine in every 24-hour period.

      In the past, people who form calcium stones were told to avoid dairy products and other foods with high calcium content. Recent studies have shown that foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may help prevent calcium stones. Taking calcium in pill form, however, may increase the risk of developing stones.

      Patients may be told to avoid food with added vitamin D and certain types of antacids that have a calcium base. Someone who has highly acidic urine may need to eat less meat, fish, and poultry. These foods increase the amount of acid in the urine.

      To prevent cystine stones, a person should drink enough water each day to dilute the concentration of cystine that escapes into the urine, which may be difficult. More than a gallon of water may be needed every 24 hours, and a third of that must be drunk during the night.

      Medical Therapy
      A doctor may prescribe certain medications to help prevent calcium and uric acid stones. These medicines control the amount of acid or alkali in the urine, key factors in crystal formation. The medicine allopurinol may also be useful in some cases of hyperuricosuria.

      Doctors usually try to control hypercalciuria, and thus prevent calcium stones, by prescribing certain diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide. These medicines decrease the amount of calcium released by the kidneys into the urine by favoring calcium retention in bone. They work best when sodium intake is low.

      Rarely, patients with hypercalciuria are given the medicine sodium cellulose phosphate, which binds calcium in the intestines and prevents it from leaking into the urine.

      If cystine stones cannot be controlled by drinking more fluids, a doctor may prescribe medicines such as Thiola and Cuprimine, which help reduce the amount of cystine in the urine.

      For struvite stones that have been totally removed, the first line of prevention is to keep the urine free of bacteria that can cause infection. A patient’s urine will be tested regularly to ensure no bacteria are present.

      If struvite stones cannot be removed, a doctor may prescribe a medicine called acetohydroxamic acid (AHA). AHA is used with long-term antibiotic medicines to prevent the infection that leads to stone growth.

      People with hyperparathyroidism sometimes develop calcium stones. Treatment in these cases is usually surgery to remove the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck. In most cases, only one of the glands is enlarged. Removing the glands cures the patient’s problem with hyperparathyroidism and kidney stones.

      Surgical Treatment
      Surgery may be needed to remove a kidney stone if it

      does not pass after a reasonable period of time and causes constant pain
      is too large to pass on its own or is caught in a difficult place
      blocks the flow of urine
      causes an ongoing urinary tract infection
      damages kidney tissue or causes constant bleeding
      has grown larger, as seen on follow-up x rays
      Until 20 years ago, open surgery was necessary to remove a stone. The surgery required a recovery time of 4 to 6 weeks. Today, treatment for these stones is greatly improved, and many options do not require major open surgery and can be performed in an outpatient setting.

      Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy
      Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is the most frequently used procedure for the treatment of kidney stones. In ESWL, shock waves that are created outside the body travel through the skin and body tissues until they hit the denser stones. The stones break down into small particles and are easily passed through the urinary tract in the urine.

      Several types of ESWL devices exist. Most devices use either x rays or ultrasound to help the surgeon pinpoint the stone during treatment. For most types of ESWL procedures, anesthesia is needed.

      In many cases, ESWL may be done on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is relatively short, and most people can resume normal activities in a few days.

      Complications may occur with ESWL. Some patients have blood in their urine for a few days after treatment. Bruising and minor discomfort in the back or abdomen from the shock waves can occur. To reduce the risk of complications, doctors usually tell patients to avoid taking aspirin and other

  45. QUESTION:
    Brain cancer and kidney stones?
    My mother died at the age of 49 from a brain tumor. My sister has told me the brain surgeon who worked with my mother said her type of tumor is very common in her female off spring -- and my sister also said that those prone to kidney stones are at a much higher risk of brain cancer. I am 47 and continually have kidney stones (up to 10 a year at times) I began getting kidney stones almost 20 years ago. I also tend to get 'cysts' or benign growths in my body that have to be surgically removed. How frightened/concerned should I be? As an aside -- I never know when my sister is tellling me the truth --

    • ANSWER:
      I am an ER nurse and kidney stones are a common ailment among my patients. I have Never heard the correlation between kidney stones and brain tumours. Check out MedWeb online...they have a lot of info about kidney stones. Obviously, a lot of time has passed since your mom died so probably her physician is not available to ask...but, you should make an appt. to discuss these concerns with your personal physician. Also, neurosurgery is an evolving field. What your mom's doctor may have thought to be fact back then may have been proved wrong over the years. Talk to your own doctor. Since you have had so many kidney stones I'm sure you've been seeing a urologist. He/she would know.

  46. QUESTION:
    Can kidney stones have an effect on my running?
    I'm a very healthy 17 year old male, and im in shape (115 pounds) and I stay outside all the time. I've had 5 kidney stones in my right kidney total in my life, so far. I had to quit track because after one run around the track, I would vomit. It can't be food, because we wouldn't run until 3 hours after lunch, and it can't be heat because we were running in 60 to 70 degree weather. I was wondering if some type of "wear and tear" on my kidney could be the cause of me being sick after only one short run, being that I had so many in the same kidney. Could that be possible?

    • ANSWER:
      my question to you is does anyone in your family suffer from kidney disease? if so, unfortunately you may be predisposed to kidney problems also. Genetics can be evil. If you have constant kidney problems, ie:stones- you really need to make sure you eat the right foods to prevent them from ever occurring. Make sure you drink water and not soda, make sure you limit protein intake along with a low sodium diet. Your ultimate goal is to take it easy on your kidneys. Avoid eating foods that stress your kidneys and they will function much more efficiently.

  47. QUESTION:
    Do I have a kidney stone? I have pain in my abdomen, and sometimes it hurts to pee.
    I've had the problem for about a week or more now. I have these "attacks," where I have pain in my lower abdomen. They'll last for seconds or minutes. I've heard that can happen when you are trying to pass stones of any type. It sometimes hurts to pee, but usually it's only if I wait a little too long. That's hard to avoid, though, since I might not feel an urge until I need to.

    I thought I'd mention that I was fixing up hamburger the days before it started. I've heard that too much protein can cause them, but I'm not sure. But I've been eating quite healthy for this same period, getting veggies and fruits, and other food groups. I've also been drinking water (mostly tap). I mix it with mixes, especially Hawaiian Punch.

    If it also sounds like it could be a different problem, you may give that a mention.

    And I'm going to be going to the doctor, but I'd like to ask around before I go. My mom thinks it's a urinary tract infection, or a kidney tract infection, or something like that. I have a feeling it's kidney stones.
    I thought I'd add again that I, personally, think it's been going on for 2 weeks. If it is an infection, would waiting until Aug 19th be safe? I made an appointment at a clinic, and that's the earliest time I could get. I have no job, so should I try a regular doctor anyway?
    Just thought I'd announce that I just went to the hospital Sunday because of the level of pain (I told them it was a 7). The funny thing is, it was because I had dismenarrhea (if I'm spelling it right), which is a painful period, that morning. As for the other pain I've been having, it was actually constipation. I knew I've been constipated, and have been working on it, but I guess it was still building up anyway. I might keep that appointment on the 19th. You never know, I might need it so I can try to get some good medicine for my constipation problems. But I just thought I'd let everyone know that I figured it out.

    • ANSWER:
      Honestly it sounds like a kidney or bladder infection and I think your mom is right. Pain from a first attack of kidney stones is horrendous typically sends a person to the ER. You could also have a narrowing or inflammation of the tube that carries waste from your kidneys to your bladder or an inflammatory condition of your bladder that is not infection related.

  48. QUESTION:
    I'm 15 girl and i have kidney stones?
    what types of foods should i stay away from i try and drink water but my back still hurts the docters cant take them out and there starting to get anoying.

    • ANSWER:
      Im personally not familiar with oranges leading to kidney stones, but I cant say that for sure....

      The most common types of kindney stones are calcium stones. An over acidic diet has also been known to lead to kidney stones also.

      Get some saliva PH paper (see link below) and test your bodies PH level. The best PH level for the human body is roughly 7.4 (slightly alkaline). Im willing to bet you're on the side of acidic.

      Try to eat more raw fruits and veggies, especially most green veggies as they tend to be the highest in alkalinity. You can also drink high PH water (some have a PH of 8 to 9). Try to make 75% of your meal alkaline. A good way to do this is to have a large salad with every meal.

      Stay away from the following acidic and problematic foods: spinach, rhubarb, chocolate, peanuts, cocoa, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, apple juice, soda (acidic and contains phosphorus), all types of tea, and berries (high levels of oxalate)

      If you need more ideas just email me.

  49. QUESTION:
    What to do for bladder infections?
    I'm 15 and I'm a girl. I've been getting a dull pain in my left lower back (probably kidney) and in my front lower left abdomen (probably my bladder). I'm afraid of what it could be or become. Bladder infection? Kidney disease? Kidney failure? Urinary tract infection? Kidney stones? Some type of cancer? I did some research and from what Ive found, when a young girl expieriences pains such as mine, a doctor must do a pelvic exam. I don't know how true this is but the reason I've always hated going to the doctor was because I was always afraid I'd get a pelvic exam for any visit to the doctors. So it turns out that now that I may have a serious problem, the only way to help myself is to do the thing I dread the most. Lovely. So anywho, I've been looking online, without actually being diagnosed, for cures to bladder infections and so on. I have failed but I hear alot of good things about cranberry juice and others said it wasn't going to help me at all. Reasons for which i dont want a pelvic exam are basically because im embarrassed or ill be nervous and i also dont want to answer questions like "are you sexually active?" which im not, and "do you masturbate?" which i do. I also have some small sores on the front of my vagina from shaving and I don't want the doctor to think it's something else. What do you think I might have? Should I risk the visit for an exam? Are they even going to give me a pelvic exam? Is there any way I can get rid of this problem myself?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, while you were busy doing "research" instead of going to the doctor, it's very likely that your bladder infection has spread to at least one of your kidneys. Now GO TO THE DOCTOR. There is no home remedy for a kidney infection. It's unlikely you will need a pelvic exam, and "are you sexually active" is a yes/no question which they probably won't bother about anyway. I've had more than one UTI, and I've never been asked whether I was sexually active, and I've never been asked whether I masturbate by a doctor under any circumstances.

      What is likely is that you'll be asked to answer some questions about your symptoms and to provide a urine sample. Just go, already.

What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology is a subspecialty of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance. Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic purposes (for example, Angiography), while others are done for treatment purposes (for example, Embolization). Images are used to direct these procedures, which are usually done with needles or other tiny instruments like small tubes called catheters. The images are like a map that allow the Radiologist to guide these instruments through the body to the area where the procedure is to be done.

Types of Interventional Radiology

1> Arteriogram: Procedure that allows a "roadmap" to be taken of the blood vessels in your abdomen, legs, arms, head and neck. These procedures are done when there is a question of abnormal circulation. These images are used to direct future therapeutic decisions.

2> Angioplasty: Minimally invasive procedure to improve blood flow to a particular area. Tiny balloons are used to stretch blood vessels, which are narrowed and diseased. This procedure is used to treat leg pains, hypertension, kidney disease, strokes or circulatory disorders. These procedures are often surgery sparing.

3> Stents: A minimally invasive procedure during which metal tubes are used to prop open blood vessels or bile ducts.

4> Embolization: Minimally invasive procedure used to decrease blood flow to various organs. This is utilized in instances of abnormal bleeding, such as due to trauma or cancer. Embolization has also been used for treatment of pelvic pain or bleeding related to uterine fibroids.

5> Venous Access: Portacaths, PICC Lines, Dialysis Catheters. Using minimally invasive techniques long-term and short-term vascular access catheters are placed in the Interventional Radiology suite. Studies have showed improved success rates using imaging guidance as compared to surgery.

6> Biopsy: Fine needle biopsy is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgical biopsy. A small needle is inserted into the area in question to help determine further therapy. The needle biopsy is often less risky and more easily tolerable for a patient.

7> Fibroid Embolization: Known medically as uterine artery embolization, this is a new alternative for women. It is a minimally invasive procedure, which means it requires only a tiny nick in the skin. It is performed while the patient is conscious but sedated - drowsy and feeling no pain.

Interventional Radiology Preparations

Each patient is unique so a pre-procedure preparation will be given to each patient. Please try to give your Interventional Radiologist a list of medications when you meet with them. Your doctor will work with your Primary Physician to help determine and give you the best treatment possible.

Interventional Radiology FAQ's

1> How long will it take to get the results?

At the conclusion of the procedure the radiologist will inform you of any results. The radiologist will also generate a report which will be sent to doctor within 24-48 hours.

2> How long do the procedures take?

The amount of time varies between procedures. Some take as little as 15 minutes and most are completed in under 1 hour. For more procedure you will be able to stay in hospital for less than 24 hrs observation.

3> How painful is the procedure?

Every effort is made to make you comfortable. Numbing medicine is used similar to what your dentist administers. While some discomforts are appended, these are tolerated by most patience, if required sedation can be given with the help of anesthetic.

4> What is a catheter?

A catheter is a simply a thin tube which is inserted into your body. These tubes allow medication and fluids to be injected into your body without needing a needle to be inserted each time. There are many different kinds of catheters, each with a specific use. Some catheters can actually be implanted under your skin so that no part of the tube is visible from the outside. The type of catheter you will receive will be discussed with you at length prior to the procedure.

5> How long does the catheter stay in?

The length of time your catheter stays in is dependent on why it was inserted in the first place. The length of time will be discussed with you prior to starting the procedure. Some stay in for a couple of days, others stay in for months.

6> Can I go home after the procedure?

For most procedures after 24 hours of observation, occasionally the radiologist will want to monitor you for an day or two. This monitoring is to ensure that it is safe for you to go home. If you have any problems after going home you will be given a number to call for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    The pain after Kidney Stone Surgery?
    I had kidney stone so i had Laser treatment and the doctor put stent. Then on Tuesday I removed the stent and came back home. But I didnt feel any pain on my right kidney at the day I came home and next day but after 2 days have passed, the pain all of a sudden have occured on a break of a day. Since then the pain occurs somewhere from 1am to 4am and when i wake up next day in the morning, I strange feel nothing at all. But then it occurs again. Is this normal? or are there any treatment that i can try to get rid of the pain? Please Help me guys...I've never been so desperate in my life :(

    • ANSWER:
      A pain which is occurring after a pain free period can be due to an infection setting in. So I would like to suggest that you should consult your surgeon if pain keeps on rising. but do not get panic. A urinary tract infection can easily be cured with antibiotics.

  2. QUESTION:
    What next, please help me find an answer?
    I am a ten year breast cancer survivor; stage I, 1.7cm, no lymph node involvement, estrogen positive to me; I had as treatment 17 CMF chemotherapy, 45 Neupogen shots, 30 radiation treatments and a quadrantectomy. My balance seemed to be off during my second chemo treatment. I told my doctor, I fell often. And in 2001 I fell down stairs, broke a tib/fib, titanium rods implanted and ended up with DVT. I have been walking with a cane since then.Last year was treated for an ear infection, serous otitis media, At the emergency room the doctor said I had bubbles on my eardrum. I was admitted to the hospital, and isolated. One doctor came in and said I had MRSA. I didn't know what that was. I was treated with many antibiotics and the only one that worked was oxacillin. I was discharged after three days. Afterwards, everything changed. I had two failed 17 year old root canals, numerous antibiotics, kidney stone,more antibiotics, ear doctor treated with more antibiotics, saw a neurologist, said I have cerebellar ataxia. Another said I didn';t. One neurologist said I had fear of falling. One said it was peripheral neuropathy. One said it was PTSD. I was thankful last year to hear that I did not have a neuro-degenerative disease. I left the state to celebrate, with my walker, my cane and a change of clothes. The third day, I fell off a foot high porch and broke the calcaneous bone and did a 2+ sprain on the left ankle. I returned back to my home with the goal of relearning to walk. However, I again became more imbalanced, my right eye started twitching and wouldn't stop. The eye doctor today tells me it is convergence. The eye doctor last year, told me nystagmus. I call it my scarry eye and continue to do vestibular therapy. Two months ago, I went on another journey to try and save my life and the quality of my life. A neurosurgeon told me, I have never seen that part of the brain completely gone. You need to go to a stroke center. Another doctor told me I might have a connective tissue disease. I tested positive for anti nuclear AB. Yes, I do have arthiritis. If I have something else I don't know. Last month I made an appt. with a gastroenterologist, because of unusual bloating and unable to urinate completely. No pain at this point. A week later I end up in the Emergency Room: told you have a 2mm kidney stone; it is in the ureter and should pass into the bladder, you should see a doctor in three days. I saw a urologist, CT scan of abdomen and pelvis. He said maybe you will pass it, if not we will do a lithotripsy and place a stent. By the end of the week I ended up in the ER again. I was admitted. The 2 mm stone now was 5.8 mm and in the ureter. I was given pain meds and stayed in the hospital so my 80 year old mother didn't have to witness me birthing a stone, Everrbody said it was nothing. I tell you it was painful. Before I was discharged from the hospital, the doctor told me a CT scan revealed it was in my bladder. That all should be okay. I have strained urine, looking for a stone, The urologist says the stone is still in the ureter, and the radiologist read the report wrong. Today, a doctor says, good news, no blood in the urine, Today, I still have problems with bloating and voiding fully. I already have problems with vestibular dysfunction and I believe that this is compromising my life. Symptoms: can't walk or stand for very long, can't walk forward without holding on. I do well in a swimming pool but sometimes, even it can be difficult. Is it the ear? IS it another disease? I am exhausted and need help? My eyes have a hard time focussing. I try to exercise, stationary bike and swimming every other day. I used to be a very active person who helped others. Please, someone help me. It is difficult being in this body.Every day I don't know what it will be like when I get up, good or bad, confident or fright.

      I have a bad back too.

  3. QUESTION:
    Uretroscopy was done could not remove stone from ureter.....!!!! Postoperative Problems as well!!!?
    2 years ago doctor detected a calculus in right kidney when i complaint acute pain in my kidney and back. since then i did not feel any pain at all.

    1 month ago i went to doctor then he says that stone is creating obstruction in the flow of urine from kidney to bladder.

    BEFORE URETEROSCOPY

    Stone size is measured in IVP about 0.5cm x 0.7cm
    Left kidney is working normally no obstruction and no stone over there.
    Right kidney is also working properly but shows some swollen(enlargement) due to obstruction created by stone.

    AFTER URETEROSCOPY

    Stone has migrated into the kidney before doctor could try to treat it with laser.
    Now they are planning for ESWL.
    A DJ Stent has been placed in me to avoid some complications.
    however blood comes out with urine whenever i drink less amount of water....!!!!
    doctor prescribed some antibiotics and now i have taken all of it.
    A tablet Flotral will go for 15 days(9 days remaining).

    I would like to ask that what should i do now, will this stone pass through urine automatically or not???

    My experience about spinal anesthesia was not so good because it was so painful, i dont want to go for another surgery.

    Does ESWL requires spinal anesthesia???

    Can i start ayurvedic medicine for the treatment for this????

    Thanks to all...!!!

    From

    Rahul Sharma

    • ANSWER:
      Very typical story. Stones can be tricky, and if they cannot be removed from the ureter, they are usually pushed up into the kidney. ESWL will turn the stone into sand, and it will then pass easily.

      ESWL is usually done under deep sedation or general anesthesia, because it is important that you do not move once they focus the sound waves on the stone. Afterward, you will be sore for a few days.

      It is important that you have the stone treated before it gets bigger. Good luck!

Treatment Of Kidney Stones In Pregnant Women

Written By: admin - Aug• 09•12

Urinary tract infection is an infection of the urethra or the urinary tract that connects the bladder to the opening of the genitals. About ninety percent of the bacteria that causes this infection is known as Escherichia coli, or also known as E coli.

There are several ways why this particular bacteria which originates from the body's own intestinal system, transfers from the colon or anus to the urethral opening located in the person's genitals. The treatment for UTI will require a careful analysis of the patient's urine sample as well as an evaluation of the patient's personal and medical history.

The latter is important, since some bacteria may be derived from other diseases the patient may be suffering from or other health disorders that both the doctor and patient is not aware of.

Basically, treatment for UTI makes use of antibacterial drugs, hence, it is important that the doctor is provided with a basis, in order to make sure that his prescription will make use of the most effective antibacterial drug.

Examples of these antibacterial medications have the following generic names:

a trimethoprim

a trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole

a amoxicillin

a nitrofurantoin

a ampicillin

a quinolones

These drugs to be effective, must be taken in accordance with the doctor's recommendations. Careful analysis of the patient's UTI condition was made before these drugs were prescribed. Depending on the doctor's evaluation, the patient may be required to take the medication for about a week or two.
This is to make sure that the drug will have a full treatment effect. After the course of the medication, the patient will be required to undergo another urinalysis. The results of the second urine testing will confirm whether the urinary tract is now free from bacterial infestations.

The manner of treatments for UTI may differ, based on the following distinguishable conditions:

1. The underlying cause for the UTI stems from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Group treatment is required and for a longer term.

2. The UTI is recurrent, usually 3 or 4 times in a year for some women. Treatments may include doses to be taken after every sexual intercourse which may last for 6 months or longer. The doctor will recommend the use of a "dipstick" as immediate test for the urine, to determine the presence of bacteria. This is useful for women who have frequent UTI recurrences.

3. The affected female is pregnant, hence the doctor has to be doubly careful in his assessment of the proper medication. Antibiotics or antibacterial are known to be unsafe for the baby, while leaving the UTI untreated may result to premature delivery or rise in blood pressure. In some cases, the pregnant woman's condition will be referred to a doctor who is experienced in handling high risk pregnancies.

4. The patient is suffering from another health disorder that may be causing a blockage in his urethra or impairing his immune system. The latter, will result in the inability of the body to naturally combat the bacterial attacks.

5. The patient is a male suffering from enlarged prostates, which makes it difficult for antibiotics to penetrate the infected areas that is causing the UTI.

6. Patients who are using catheters, in which case the doctor has to identify the microorganism, in order to determine the type of antibacterial medication that can eradicate the strain.

Researchers have gathered from their studies that children and women who have frequently recurring urinary tract infections have protein deficiencies. In addition, they are found to have low levels of antibodies, hence their weak immune systems make them more susceptible to UTI.

Henceforth, doctors will often include certain recommendations for diet supplementation as well as drinking sufficient amounts of water. In all cases of treatment for UTIs, part of the recommendations will also touch on the matter of personal hygiene and the practice of safe sex.

High uric acid causes gout and, potentially, kidney stones. Discover, here, what causes high uric acid, why your diet is very important, and, how you can treat high acid levels totally naturally, without costly drugs and their nasty side effects.

HIGH URIC ACID CAUSES

Uric acid is produced quite naturally in your body as the result of the breakdown of chemical compounds called "purines" which are essential in providing you with your protein and energy.

And, one of your kidney's jobs is to process this uric acid and expel it out of your system, mainly via the urine, but also, a very small amount through your stools.

Now, if you kidneys are healthy and working to maximum efficiency, and, the process described above isn't producing too much uric acid for your kidneys to handle, then the low levels of acid in your blood generally don't cause you any problems.

But, should there be way to much acid produced, or, your kidneys aren't working at 100%, then excess uric acid is retained and circulated around your body.

Eventually this excess acid gathers in clusters around your joints and surrounding tissue in the form of uric acid crystals. These crystals are microscopic "needles" which then cause the swelling, redness, inflammation and agonies of gout.

Gout is extremely debilitating, but even worse is that, once having had a gout attack, you're almost certain to have more. And frequent gout attacks can lead to permanently damaged joints and damaged kidneys, including painful kidney stones.

That's why your treatment choices are very important, and, a key part of any treatment for gout has to be your diet...

DIET FOR HIGH URIC ACID

As well as being in your body, purines are in your food. Some foods are very high in purines, others are high, some are moderate and some have little purine content.

And remember above, even with your kidneys working efficiently, if there is just too much uric acid being produced such that they can't cope, then excess uric acid will be circulated causing gout attacks.

Therefore, anyone who suffers from gout needs to carefully consider their diet and adjust it accordingly.

Certain foods need to be avoided, as these are either high, or, very high in purines. These are typically; red meat, meat extracts, gravy, broth, kidneys, liver, brains, heart, sweetbreads, roe, sardines, mackerel, herring, shellfish, partridge, turkey, goose, turkey, yeast, yeast extracts and alcohol, especially beer.

There are other foods which could be said to have moderately high levels of purines, such as; dried peas, spinach, lentils, dried legumes, soy, oatmeal, mushrooms, cauliflower and asparagus. These need to be reduced, but some people, for some unknown reason, still find that asparagus and mushrooms, for instance, can trigger a gout attack!

Relatively low purine foods which can be safely consumed are; low fat dairy products, foods high in vitamin C, complex carbs (e.g. rice, pasta, cereals, etc.), and, essential fatty acids (e.g. tuna, salmon, nuts, etc.).

HOME REMEDIES FOR URIC ACID

Because of the nasty side effects that many of the drug-based medications for gout have, plus, their cost, more and more gout sufferers are turning to natural home remedies for their gout.

Herbs, selected vegetables, fruits, natural supplements, natural kidney cleanses, natural detoxing, and many other natural resources are used to help lower uric acid, reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Typical are the use of cherries, apple cider vinegar (consumed and applied), garlic, hot and cold compresses, folic acid, parsley, etc.

There are lots out there, you just need to figure out what works and what doesn't work for you, as everyone reacts differently.

You're in luck though. There's a uric acid gout report available online that thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program.

And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods. So that you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage.

    chronic kidney stone problems?
    for the past year ive had a few small kidney stones made up of uric acid in my kidneys and they cause pain quite frequently and there is always microscopic blood in my urine. like i think there is a stone permanently stuck in one of those tubes (whatever they are called) or in a bad place in a kidney. im really worried this will cause cancer eventually or something. ive had so many tests but tests and treatments arent good for uric acid stones. any advice please? will this cause cancer? thanks

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    treatment of stones during pregnancy?
    I am 29 weeks and 2 days. I was experiencing blood in my urine and the doctors could not find any infection in my urinary tract system. I have horrible pain coming from the left side of my back and they are assuming its a stone. What is the treatment for pregnant women and kidney stones?

    • ANSWER:
      I had a kidney stone at about 4 months during my pregnancy. There's not a whole lot they can do for you to intervene like they usually would when you normally have a kidney stone. They can give you an iv to help push the stone through and there are some pain killers that are ok to take during pregnancy to get you through the back pain (your dr will be able to tell you which ones). Usually a stone will pass in just a few days. In my case I was in periodic pain for about two months and I have heard of cases where it took longer. The uterus is really pushing down on the ureter and bladder which can make the stone harder to pass. If you are really really in a lot of pain for a long time they can attempt to either place a stent (keeping the urine going around the stone) or try to physically retrieve it. Both the high risk OB and the urologist I was referred to advised against it if at all possible saying that it would likely be more painful than the stone itself. I read stories from pregnant women (with kidney stones and stents) online that seemed to confirm this.
      What I was told that I could do and things that helped:
      -Drink 12-16 glasses of water a day (this is the most important thing you can do, it's the best researched and supported solution to stones no matter what)
      -Add a little bit of citrate to your diet (real lemon juice)
      -Make sure you're getting enough real calcium, not from supplements. There is some evidence that a calcium supplement can actually increase your chance of making a stone.
      -Watch your oxalate intake. This is the most updated and reliable list I've been able to find.
      http://www.ohf.org/docs/Oxalate2008.pdf
      -Heat packs or a hot shower can greatly reduce the pain in your back.
      -Strain your urine so you can save the stone if you pass it.
      -Get a little bit of exercise every day if possible. There is evidence that too sedentary of a lifestyle can contribute to stone formation.
      Good Luck!

  2. QUESTION:
    I need verification from someone who knows about diabetes and kidney failure...?
    So this is for a story that I'm writing. I want to make sure that all of my facts are right, here. I know absolutely nothing about medicine or medical terminology. I've tried to research some stuff that would fit with my storyline, and I've got a little bit, but I would love confirmation that what I've got is right. And I know that there are some serious gaps that need to be filled in to make it correct.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    One of my characters (a woman in her early 40's) has diabetes. She may have experienced some of the symptoms but it overall unaware of her condition.
    She faints and is unconscious for an unusual amount of time. She is taken to the hospital where she is informed that she has kidney failure, a complication from her diabetes.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Alright, that's all I've got. What I need to know is if this is plausible. Also, if there's anything else that you can tell me about specifics that will add authenticity to the story, that would be great. (ie symptoms, treatments, etc.)

    AND at the moment, I am planning on killing her off because of the kidney failure. I need to know how long it would take and how it would occur as well as the treatments she would undergo, the type of costs attached, and the decisions that she would need to make concerning such treatments.

    Her death, however, is not set in stone so I would also like to be aware of the chances of death and the following treatment and rehabilitation process if she were to survive.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Thanks a ton!
  3. QUESTION:
    please help, what can painful urination for males mean?
    please be kind and be serious...my boyfriend has been in serious pain when he goes to the bathroom. he never feels like he has to go till a few seconds before, and then runs to the bathroom in distance. also it hurts him after 'play time'.
    i tried calling planned parenthood to set up an appointment for him thinking it was a bladder infection, but the woman who answered said that its impossible for males. not just that, but its a serious problem and he should be rushed to hospital immediately. she suggested kidney stones may be the problem...
    first off, what are your opinions of what the problem may be, and how can it be treated? if you think it may be kidney stones, please explain to me how they form and how they can be treated (please please please dont say surgery -_- ....)
    second...we both cant trust our parents with this all so were going as just us. prob is, idk how we can pay for whatever treatment he gets at hospital. we probably wont be able to use his insurance casue hed have to ask his mom for his id. could the hospital hook him up with insurance without the id if he already has a hospital record there? if not, how much would u estimate that we would have to pay for the hospital bill for w/e is the problem
    thank u
    -_- and no...his parents wont address the problem, hence why its just us going. his mom wouldnt bring him unless he was passed out on the floor....multiple times
    • ANSWER:
      Have him talk to his parents, and have them set an appointment up at his doctors. All he needs to tell them is that he is having severe pains when he urinates. He can speak to the doctors in confidence, and they can help him talk to his parents about anything you might think will offend them. Doctors are professionals and have seen almost everything, they will know what to do. But, if you wait, your boyfriend could end up seriously injured. But, you will have to pay no matter where you go, so just let his parents get him the appointment and he can deal with it from there. That is what is best.
  4. QUESTION:
    have you had IUD Problems?
    I am a 22 year old woman that has chosen to wait to have children, I have been on birth control since I was ten years old, mostly because my period would be to overbearing and my doctor suggested a light hormonal treatment. I had the ParaGuard inserted about a year ago, the first time my body expelled it. My doctor also strongly recommended this method (ParaGuard) because I had a lump on my breast and she didn’t want to risk breast cancer… Since then I’ve noticed dramatic changes in my body: the lump has disappeared and my periods are a new problem. My periods last now anywhere from 5 days to an unbearable 14. To make matters worse, I have a 23 day cycle instead of a normal 28 days; therefore I only get a week off. The cramps have slowly reached the pinnacle, they take over me: I take Ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, Tylenol, Pills that should take care of menstrual relief. But nothing works… I’ve had kidney stones before, and at times I’m confused if it’s a kidney stone or just cramps; that’s the only way to explain my cramps. This last cycle has complexly thrown me off, it’s no longer just cramps, it’s ridiculous mood swings too: I was out on a date with my BF of 2 years, and for no apparent reason I started crying, I retreated back to my house to have a crazy crying fest, (things are tough, but never to the point where I’m crying about it). I’ve had insane heat flashes, one moment I’m under the covers the next I’m standing outside in 35 degree weather trying to lower my temperature. Since then I suffer from insomnia, feeling like my body never really rests. My question is: has anyone had these problems at the severity that I am at? If so was it a hormonal issue? Could it be possible that my body needs the steady flow of extra hormones lapse through my body? Please help.
    FORGIVE OUR ENEMIES
    In his Sunday sermon, the minister used "Forgive Your Enemies" as his subject. After the sermon, he asked how many were willing to forgive their enemies. About half held up their hands.
    Not satisfied, he harangued the congregation for another twenty minutes and repeated his question. This received a response of eighty percent. Still unsatisfied, he lectured for fifteen more minutes and repeated his question. All responded except one elderly gentleman in the rear.
    "Mr. Jones, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?" "I don't have any." "Mr. Jones, that is very unusual. How old are you?" "One Hundred and one". "Mr. Jones, please come down in front and tell the congregation how a man can live to be one hundred and one and not have an enemy in the world."
    The old man teetered down the aisle, slowly turned to face the congregation, smiled and said, "I outlived every one of them!"
Frequently Asked Questions
  1. QUESTION:
    Does anyone know any good and safe natural home remedies for Kidney Stones?
    I get Kidney Stones. I'm a 24 year old female. My first stone was when I was 18 years old. I believe in the left kidney, if I am remembering correctly. If anyone reading this has ever had them, then you know they're excruciating! :( At that time, I had insurance (I live in the state of PA so I was covered under some PA insurance for children called CHIP.) so, I went to the local ER. Determined I had one small stone. It was a couple millimeters. They said to drink TONS of water and try to catch it, and gave me Percocet for the pain. I ended up passing the stone after about 2 days. But, was unable to catch it, so I don't know what causes my stones. I currently have no health insurance and no money to pay for doctors and such, and visits to the ER are very expensive here.
    Back in December I got the same pain I get from a Kidney Stone in my right kidney. Went to the ER, they didn't do much for me, since I have no way to pay. They give you very minimal treatment if you can't pay. They basically just gave me a prescription for Vicodin and 800mg of Ibuprofen tablets. I had pain off and on for about a week, eventually, it just stopped. I never did pass the stone though, I'm sure of that. Then about a week ago, I started getting really bad pain in my left kidney. So, I guess I have a new stone in there. I had some Vicodin left from December. But, I used all that. Now all I have is the Ibuprofen. It doesn't really work. I should go to the ER when I get pain again, but I am tired of racking up huge bills that I can't pay. Not to mention, they usually just give Vicodin for the pain (which no longer works on me) and if I ask for something else it might just look like I only want the drugs. So, I'm trying not to go to the ER unless I really have to. Thankfully, today has been pain free. I hope it stays that way. But, I'm sure I didn't pass the stone. As far as I know, I have at least one in each kidney.
    So, what I am wondering, does anyone know any real (and SAFE) natural remedies that can help break up/dissolve kidney stones? I've been reading up online about all this stuff, I read that Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with some warm water is supposed to help certain kinds of kidney stones. I don't know what mine are from though or if the ACV solution will help. But, I started trying it last night. I also read Lemon Juice with Olive Oil helps, but there is no way I am trying that one. That sounds horrible. I am just barely managing the ACV. I also read Lemon Juice with water helps. I might be able to try that one. They're the only ones I know though.
    So, please, if anyone knows any other safe, natural home remedies I can try that would help break up/dissolve my stones, that'd be great. Also, for those familiar with the remedies I already mentioned, does anyone know if they're good for all kinds of kidney stones? Or, only certain kinds? And, which kinds are these remedies good for? Sorry for this being so long and informational, I just wanted to be as specific as possible about my history in case it helps. I'm just desperate to try to get rid of these stones and get some relief. Please, honest and thoughtful answers only!
  2. QUESTION:
    have you had IUD Problems?
    I am a 22 year old woman that has chosen to wait to have children, I have been on birth control since I was ten years old, mostly because my period would be to overbearing and my doctor suggested a light hormonal treatment. I had the ParaGuard inserted about a year ago, the first time my body expelled it. My doctor also strongly recommended this method (ParaGuard) because I had a lump on my breast and she didn’t want to risk breast cancer… Since then I’ve noticed dramatic changes in my body: the lump has disappeared and my periods are a new problem. My periods last now anywhere from 5 days to an unbearable 14. To make matters worse, I have a 23 day cycle instead of a normal 28 days; therefore I only get a week off. The cramps have slowly reached the pinnacle, they take over me: I take Ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, Tylenol, Pills that should take care of menstrual relief. But nothing works… I’ve had kidney stones before, and at times I’m confused if it’s a kidney stone or just cramps; that’s the only way to explain my cramps. This last cycle has complexly thrown me off, it’s no longer just cramps, it’s ridiculous mood swings too: I was out on a date with my BF of 2 years, and for no apparent reason I started crying, I retreated back to my house to have a crazy crying fest, (things are tough, but never to the point where I’m crying about it). I’ve had insane heat flashes, one moment I’m under the covers the next I’m standing outside in 35 degree weather trying to lower my temperature. Since then I suffer from insomnia, feeling like my body never really rests. My question is: has anyone had these problems at the severity that I am at? If so was it a hormonal issue? Could it be possible that my body needs the steady flow of extra hormones lapse through my body? Please help.
