We read and hear so much about the problems of fats in our foods these days. Its seems that some fats are bad fats and some are healthy fats - but what are they?
Saturated fats:
Saturated fats are high on the ‘bad fats’ list in our foods. They are found mostly in foods we get from animals, and from some plants.
Those from animals include pork, beef, veal, lamb, and poultry – and also foods derived from them – beef fat, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, cheese and other dairy products made from whole milk.
The highest levels of saturated fats from plant sources in our foods are found in coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil and in cocoa butter [which is used in making chocolate].
Why are saturated fats ‘bad fats’?
Saturated fat is the main dietary cause of high blood cholesterol. It is recommended by heart health authorities that you should limit your saturated fat intake to 7–10 percent (preferably less) of your total calorie intake each day.
If you have coronary heart disease or if your LDL cholesterol level is higher than 100 mg/dL you should consult your doctor about the Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) Diet. In the TLC diet it is recommended that no more than 25% - 35% of your daily calorie intake should be from fat, and that the amount of saturated fat in your daily diet should be less than 7% of your daily calorie intake.
Trans fatty acids – also known as ‘trans fat’:
During food processing some fats undergo a chemical process called hydrogenation. This chemically changes the fats which limits your body's ability to regulate cholesterol when you have eaten these trans fats.
This chemical change occurs mostly commonly in the manufacture of margarine and shortening. Trans fats are widely found then in foods such as vegetable shortening and some margarines and in the many food products which use these in their manufacture - foods such as crackers, candies, baked goods, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, salad dressings, and many processed foods.
Trans fats are considered to be the most harmful to your health because there is a direct, proven relationship between diets high in trans fat content and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels and, therefore, and increased risk of coronary heart disease – a leading cause of death in the US.
If you use hydrogenated fats, and it is difficult to eliminate them completely from your diet, ensure they contain no more than two grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. The saturated fat content of most margarines and spreads is printed on the package or on the Nutrition Facts label and you should always read these details carefully.
Unsaturated fats:
There are two unsaturated fats - polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. These are found primarily in oils derived from plants.
Polyunsaturated fats are found in safflower, sesame and sunflower seeds, corn and soybeans, many nuts and seeds, and the oils made from these seeds and nuts.
Monounsaturated fats are found in canola, olive and peanut oils, and in avocados.
Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats may help lower your blood cholesterol level when you use them in place of saturated fats in your diet. That is, in place of using fats with a high saturated fat content, such as butter, lard or hydrogenated shortenings.
However, you should realize that a moderate intake of all types of fat is best. Just because polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils — and margarines and spreads made from them — are better for you, you should still only include limited amounts of them in your diet.
You can see from this discussion that there are "good" fats and "bad" ones. To put it simply, saturated fats and trans fat have bad effects on cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, when eaten in moderation, have beneficial effects on your health.
This is general information only. If you have any queries or concerns about the fats you are currently including in your diet, and the effects they may be having on your health, you should consult your doctor to have your cholesterol levels checked. If you want more detailed information about what specific foods should or should not be included in your diet, ask your doctor to recommend you to a nutrition expert.

QUESTION:
What are kidney stones and why is she passing another?
My mom is starting to pass another kidney stone. She isn't much of a coffee or soda drinker though. What causes a kidney stone and how might we try to prevent this from happening again? The last time she passes one was just over 8 years ago right after she had my little sister. Any advice or information on what kidney stones are would be helpful.-
ANSWER:
kidney stones come in different forms. The most common ones are made of calcium, but there are two other types. They are common and happen to many people. The passing of them is the most painful part, and she can have them tested to see what kind it is and they can tell her how to change her diet to prevent them (she would have to catch it in a strainer or a coffee filter and take it to her urologist). I have had kidney stones 3 times, and I'm only 27. I actually have one currently that has to be surgically removed. If you google kidney stones, you will find a lot of information. Prevention really depends on the type of stone, though, so the only person that can really tell her how to prevent them is the doctor.

QUESTION:
How can I help my cat with kidney stones?
My 11-year-old male cat (neutered and indoor) has kidney stones. For the past couple days he's been having a lot of trouble urinating, and when he does manage to urinate there's been blood in his urine. He's also been vomiting and doesn't have an appetite. He's had kidney stones a couple times before, and when I took him to the vet, they gave me these pills to give him, but he would just throw them up. I don't remember what was in the pills they gave me, but I know they were an antibiotic.
What can I do to help him until I can get him to the vet? Is there any way I can help him break up the stones, like a special diet I could give him? I know I shouldn't give him dry cat food -- are there certain vitamins that could help break up the stones, or ways to encourage him to eat and drink more? Also, what can the vets do to help him, other than surgically removing the stones? Is there something like an antibiotic shot they could give him?
Thanks in advance!
-
ANSWER:
What possible good effect could come from giving a cat antibiotics for kidney stones (from calcium)?A urine that is too acid causes the stones to form. I am sure Dr. Hill has a formulation for that in his Science Diet special food and that is what your cat should eat until the problem with the stones is resolved. If the diet doesn't correct the acid urine then surgery to remove the stones is the only recourse.
There is nothing you can use in the interim to help your cat. Get him to the vet as soon as possible and try the special diet.

QUESTION:
What are the side effects of kidney stones?
And could someone who drinks almost a gallon of water a day, occasionally a glass of skim milk, and never drinks soda get kidney stones? How can I know if that is what the lower back pain is from?-
ANSWER:
You can get kidney stones from other things besides dehydration. I had at least 12 stones due to an addiction to antacids which had calcium in them. I ate them everyday, probably a roll or so a day ( Rolaids). You can never be sure what pain is from without seeing the stones or being examined by a Dr. I had to have a series of ultrasounds done, even though I passed two stones in a urine cup, one about the size of a pen tip, the other about twice that size. The pain can be pretty excruciating and you can have burning sensation and blood in the urine also.
Since, there are many other problems you can have that cause back pain, my suggestion would be for you to see a Dr. and let he/she figure out whats going on.
I hope you back feels better soon!
Symptoms of kidney stones are:
back pain
blood in urine
burning when peeing
fever
nausea
abdominal/lower region pain

QUESTION:
How do you check to see if you have kidney stones and what are the symptoms?
Plus, where I'm from they have "Hard water" which is build up of calcium deposits. I don't drink the water. I haven't bought a water filter yet for my faucet. However, I have a big thing of Kool-Aid mix that I want to drink, but I don't want to get kidney stones. Will one gallon of this water form up calcium deposits in my kidneys or is it something that happens over time long term?-
ANSWER:
Well, the clue that you have kidney stones comes from the excruciating pain. The most common type of stone is a calcium stone, but comes from a long time of calcium build-up. It is just as much or more related to dehydration, which causes the calcium in the urine to become concentrated. You will not get a stone from drinking a gallon of water. Think about it, people take Tums and other calcium supplements, and there is nowhere near the amount of calcium in the water.

QUESTION:
What is the worst thing that can happen to someone with kidney stones?
My Dad said my brother had to go to the hospital during school today and they are running tests to see if he has kidney stones. He is only 12 and I am worried something really bad might happen to him. My Dad said he might have to get surgery.-
ANSWER:
Anyone who has had a kidney stone can tell you the worst thing is the pain.Kidney stones are very unusual in a 12-year-old, so there may be something else he has.
Kidney stones, if properly treated, do not cause long-term problems or death. They do tend to recur. If not properly treated, there may be kidney damage in the long run. Since your brother is seeing a doctor, you don't need to worry about this "worst thing."
Surgery is rarely done for kidney stones. Sometimes the kidney itself is full of a very big stone, but they prefer to zap it with ultrasound and break it into pieces. The stones that hurt are the ones that leave the kidney and move down the ureter and urethra. Since they are made of crystals, they have sharp edges that scrape and cause pain. If they get stuck and will not move down, the doctor may insert an instrument through the urethra to get to the stone.
If the test show that your brother has kidney stones, don't worry about it.

QUESTION:
How do they get rid of kidney stones?
I am seventeen and was recently diagnosed with kidney stones and I'm just curious to what they are, how you get rid of them, how long they'll take to go away and what will they do when I go see the specialist? As much information that I could understand would be appreciated.-
ANSWER:
They're basically large crystals that form in the kidneys. If they stay there, they usually don't bother you.If they start to "pass" down towards the bladder, there's pain. It CAN be significant. LOTS of fluids and pain relief are the main treatments.
If it doesn't pass, a urologist may need to pass an instrument up and break up the stone with a laser.
Before that, they may try lithotripsy. In this, the stone is hit with ultrasound waves from the outside. Most stones are calcium based, but that doesn't mean you avoid calcium.
I try to drink enough fluid so that I pee clear. Not yellow, not pale, clear.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
What causes kidney stones and how can they be avoided?
Kidney stones are one of my biggest fears in life honestly. What dietary habits cause them? Where do they come from? How do I make sure they never happen to me?!?-
ANSWER:
I'm providing you with some links containing a lot of useful information on this subject including what causes kidney stones, what foods to avoid and a lot of other good stuff. FYI, I had a kidney stone throughout most of January '09. The two forms of pain associated with it are dull and acute. Acute was the worst pain I ever felt. Drinking LOTS of water daily helps prevent them. Also, avoid foods with oxalate (provided in the first link). I had to have shock wave lithotripsy to blast my stone into sand. The procedure doesn't hurt and you get put under anesthesia.

Garlic lowers cholesterol and reduces inflammation.
Buy it fresh, bottled, minced or powdered, and add it to meat,
vegetable or pasta dishes. You can also roast a head of garlic and
spread on bread. Garlic provides a delicious flavor and garlic powder
is a great substitute for garlic salt in the dialysis diet.

ANSWER:
Well, it's obvious you are from India and your culture does believe in healing by herbs and similar methods. Himalya Cystone may work for extremely small stones, but I personally don't feel it will work for larger stones. If you are constantly in pain then this could mean your have one or more larger stones in the area and I doubt Himalya Cystone would work quickly enough for you.
I suggest you either get another Conventional doctor for a second opinion or go straight to a hospital for a scan to detect how large your kidney stones are.

QUESTION:
Gallstones and kidney stone are the result of the formation of insoluble soilds (Stones) that block the ducts?
Gallstones and kidney stones are the result of the formation of insolube soilds (stones) that block the ducts from these organs.Question:
What chemicals are used in their formation in the human body?
-
ANSWER:
There are no chemicals used to form them.
Let me do my best to explain.A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in a kidney out of substances in the urine.
A stone may stay in the kidney or break loose and travel down the urinary tract. A small stone may pass all the way out of the body without causing too much pain.
A larger stone may get stuck in a ureter, the bladder, or the urethra. A problem stone can block the flow of urine and cause great pain. There are four major types of kidney stones.
The most common type of stone contains calcium. Calcium is a normal part of a healthy diet.
Calcium that is not used by the bones and muscles goes to the kidneys. In most people, the kidneys flush out the extra calcium with the rest of the urine. People who have calcium stones keep the calcium in their kidneys.
The calcium that stays behind joins with other waste products to form a stone. The most common combination is called calcium oxalate.A struvite stone may form after an infection in the urinary system. These stones contain the mineral magnesium and the waste product ammonia.
A uric acid stone may form when the urine contains too much acid. If you tend to form uric acid stones, you may need to cut back on the amount of meat you eat.
Cysteine stones are rare. Cysteine is one of the building blocks that make up muscles, nerves, and other parts of the body. Cysteine can build up in the urine to form a stone. The disease that causes cysteine stones runs in families.
Gallstones are a small, hard crystalline mass formed abnormally in the gallbladder or bile ducts from bile pigments, cholesterol, and calcium salts. Gallstones can cause severe pain and blockage of the bile duct. Gallstones can also be lodged in the common bile duct and create further problems with the pancreas such as pancreatitis.
The calcium types of stones are often the result of taking the wrong kind of calcium supplements, calcium carbonate. (Chelated and citrate forms are much better forms of any mineral.)
There are many types of gallstones. Cholesterol stones, various types of pigment stones, stones that form because of specific medication use (rare), and other rare stones that form from calcium carbonate.
Cholesterol stones are the most common type of gallstone to develop, and occur in approximately 80% of people who get gallstones. Cholesterol stones are made mostly of hardened cholesterol, and are usually yellowish-green in color. Pigment stones are made of bilirubin, and are the stones are usually small and dark in color. Gallstones can be as small as grains of sand or as big as golf balls. Smaller stones are more common, though bigger stones do develop.Personally I would not suggest cranberry juice as it can make stones because it is high in oxalic acid. Cranberry juice contain oxalates, and has been associated with a higher risk for risk for calcium oxalate stones. Cranberry juice has properties that may increase the risk for both calcium oxalate and uric acid stones. On the other hand, cranberry juice helps prevent urinary tract infections and so may be helpful for reducing the risk for struvite and brushite stones. (These stones are far less common, however.)
Good Luck to you.

QUESTION:
What are the signs of kidney stones?
i think i might have kidney stones, im only in middle school, but i've been having cramps, and the side will just hurt!! and my pee is cloudy, and smells horrible!! and idk
and is it embarrassing to have kidney stones? and idk how i should tell my mom?-
ANSWER:
Sometimes the disease is hidden and discovered by chance during an X-ray study on other issues or the first kidney stones symptoms appear when the stone is large, but the patient notes only aching vague pain in the lumbar area.
In most cases with a small stone the disease is manifested with renal colic attacks, and with the dull pains, changes in urine, release of stones and sand between the attacks. Dull pain in the lumbar area increases with prolonged walking, during the shaky ride, after lifting weights, but more often without a specific reason. If the urinary tract along with stones has an infection, there may be a temperature rise and chills.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.

QUESTION:
How many Kidney stones is abnormal?
My hsand is 29 and has had 20 kidney stones in the last 7 years. The doctor says they are calcium stones and he just needs to watch his diet. Is there something else that can be causing these? A medicial reason of some kind? What can we do so he can be pain free?-
ANSWER:
Basically, all kidney stones are abnormal. If one occurs, this is abnormal and 20 is very abnormal. Calcium stones are by far the most common type of stones and there can many conditions that predispose to this. Conditions that can predispose to calcium stones include: High calcium levels in the urine or blood, low citrate levels in the urine, and high oxalate levels in the urine (You probably don't know what citrate or oxalate are, but don't worry about it for now). These causes should be evaluated by his physician through various lab tests, because some of these require special treatment. In general, we recommend that all patients with recurrent calcium stones drink plenty of water (At least 2 liters daily). There are other treatment options depending on the results of the tests performed. Sometimes extra calcium supplementation is recommended to reduce stone formation or medications that lower the calcium level in the urine. If a cause for recurrent stones is determined then we try to treat that cause if we can. Sometimes we can't figure out why someone is having recurrent stones, but there are still treatment options. So basically, your husband needs to discuss this with his doctor. I hope this helps.

QUESTION:
What are some ways to deal with kidney stones?
Recently I've had a kidney stone and it was the worst pain I've ever felt. I think I got it from some medicine that I took for an ear infection and I don't know if I'll develop more. I just want to know some ways to deal with the pain or ways to help prevent or dissolve them.-
ANSWER:
In the treatment of kidney stones, herbs can be used to break them down and prevent their formation in the first place. Herbs can also encourage the flow of urine and relieve the irritated walls of the urinary tract. Gravelroot has long been used to dissolve kidney stones. The root is commonly taken in decoction or tincture form. Madder, hydrangea, and rumex can also help break up stones. Aloe vera juice may clear stones and prevent new ones from forming.Other herbs, such as cornsilk and couch grass, can soothe the walls of the urinary tract. Juniper berries, often used to clear urinary tract infections, can be added to an herbal treatment for stones.

QUESTION:
Are there any pills you can get prescribed to reduce the risk of getting kidney stones.?
My mum was previously prescribed Ranitidine for excess stomach acid, but had stopped taking it. As kidney stones can result from having too much acid in urine, would continuing to take this pill have helped or not and if not what medication would?-
ANSWER:
No, Ranitidine blocks the production of stomach acid in your digestive tract which is seperate from acids found in your urine. Normally uric acid is converted to ammonia which is excreted into the kidneys. Stomach acid is never reabsorbed into the bloodstream because it is buffered in the intestine. The most common stones is calcium oxalate. Now you might be thinking to reduce calcium intake however, most people arean't getting enough calcium in the first place. However, alkaline urine (basic) can precipitate calcium stones. Usually, increased calcium levels in the blood is caused by metabolic disorders in your body rather than increased intake.
The next culprite is oxalate. Oxalate are found in meats. If you injest too much meat and protein you will have an increase in oxalate absorption. Also, Calcium inhibits oxalate absorption. Therefore, if you take calcium, it will bind up residual oxalate in your gut and pass it out in your feces hence it won't get into your kidneys.
Lastly is Uric acid stones which can precipitate with ACIDIC urine (opposite of calcium which is basic urine). Uric acid is also from excess meat intake. As protein breaks down in gets reduced to purines which then gets converted to uric acid.
My two cents:
Best thing to do is not worry about your mothers urine pH unless she is taking medications or have medical conditions. Stop the ranitidine. To best prevent kidney stones:1) Contine or increase calcium supplements
2) Heat only the recommended servings of meat (2-3 per day)
3) Drink lots of water, the more water you have in your body, the less likely stones would be produced
4) Eat citrous foods (oranges etc) or take Calcium citrate. Citrate is known to `bust`early formation of stones.

QUESTION:
Herbal remedies for kidney stones/prevention of?
What herbal remedies are good to take to deal with kidney stones while you still have them, and what might be a good life-long remedy to prevent future occurrences?I have one little guy (2mm) in my right ureter which I am waiting to pass. I'm drinking as much as possible, but if there are any herbal remedies that might assist with pain, passage or dissolution, I'd love to hear about it.
And since I never want another, I'd like to learn about natural remedies for prevention - something I can do for the rest of my life.
I've done some research already and have found some suggestions, but nothing consistent.
Since I haven't yet passed it I don't know which kind it is, if that makes any difference.-
ANSWER:
Ultimately, they are typically formed when someone gets more Calcium than their body can absorb (among other minerals taken in too high of doses), then the Calcium builds up in their kidneys. With that being said, the main natural products that help with kidney health are Cranberry, Juniper Berry, Corn Silk, and Uva Ursi.
No supplement can make any medical claims on their own, so the supplements can't claim to help/prevent kidney stones.... but if your kidneys are healthy, they should run really well.

QUESTION:
What are all my options for getting rid of kidney stones?
I drink Pepsi like it's going out of style. I think I might have stones because of it. What all should I do?-
ANSWER:
There are different reasons your body makes renal calculi...some are do to the amount of water you drink, kinds of food you eat, and sometimes its just YOU. Depending on the size of stone, you can hydrate and try to pass the stone naturally. If the stone is LARGE a urologist may need to assist in the removal with lithotrispy or removing it through your urethra. Both have pros and cons. If your stone isn't too large, hydrate big time! Try holding your urine untill you just can't stand it and then urinate. Keep doing this and it may help get rid of it. There will be pain, but there really isn't a way around that unless your Dr. gives you a Rx. Hope that helps...Later

i have to piss in a jug for 24 hours so they can analyze it to see what my kidney stones are made of. since i smoked pot in the last week will they find the marijuana just by looking at it or do they actually have to test it?-
ANSWER:
They aren't looking for marijuana and will not specifically test for it. Don't worry. Don't wait a week or so to do your test either. They would have to specifically test for it to detect it. It is of no relevance to your current problem. Your doctor is not interested in finding out if you smoke pot.

QUESTION:
What are the odds of being predisposed to having kidney stones?
There have been several people in my immediate family that have all had fairly bad kidney stone attacks: my mom, her brother, my father and my grandfather on my dad's side. There may have been other people in the family as well that we just don't know about. I'm just wondering what the odds are that I could be at a high risk of developing them or at least having them move. Or is it something that isn't even genetically determined, like it wouldn't matter is no one in my family had them, I could still get them?Cause I really want to know if I have to deal with that kind of pain!-
ANSWER:
Nobody in my family ever had one and I got one.. allbeit I had the that sonic sound wave thing done to dissolve them and they never really hurt that much.
Kidney stones can be made of either calcium(no its not from drinking too much milk) or uremic acid, the acid formed in your kidney for urine. My urologist said nobody knows why they happen the whole situation ended in a matter of months. May any stones you may get be small like mine were.. but dont' agonize over it you might be lucky and never get one! Drink water daily at least 6 glasses to keep your kidneys clear, if you develop really small ones they could pass without you even knowing it!

QUESTION:
What are kidney stones and why do people make such a big deal about them? ?
I've never had a kidney stone or know what they are for that matter. So can some please tell me what they are and why they are such a big deal.-
ANSWER:
My step dad used to get them and I would hear him screaming in the bathroom. It's a HORRIBLE thing to have, because, well, imagine having to pee our a sharp, jagged rock that was a bit too big to go from your kidney to your bladder through your urethra and out into the toilet. It cuts, scrapes, and gouges its way through your pee hole. Afterward, people pee blood. That's why its so horrible.

QUESTION:
How do kidney stones form? What are the causes? Why do they form?
I am wondering why kidney stones form to help prevent them.Plz respond. Thnx. =]-
ANSWER:
I like to use the site www.webmd.com for information. Too long an answer to get into, but to help prevent kidney stones you need to drink a lot of water. Some theories are that stones are partially due to low calcium intake, since the body will take calcium from the bones and excrete it in the urine. As a preventative, you can also drink weak lemonade each day to help dissolve stones. Also, they can be caused by diets high in nitrates (processed meat) and salts. They are several different kinds of stones, formed of different materials (calcium oxalate, etc.). My 2 brothers and 2 sisters and I all suffer from kidney stones, and we are now 56, 55, 50, 46, and 36 years old-so some tendencies could be hereditary with how your body processes food.

My mom has extreme kidney problems, passing kidney stones like every other week, and she has tons of kidney stones in her kidneys. My dad said more than likely I'll be prone to get problems when I get older, im14 and I want to know ways to help with kidney problems just in case,so I can keep these in mind for the rest of my life especially since I'm a guy (twice as bad to pass the stones), and I'd rather not go through what my mom does. QUESTION:
What happens after you have kidney stones for a long time?
My mom is in the hospital right now and i feel uncomfortable about whats going to happen. She has had them for quite some time. She always complains about then. This is not the first time going to the hospital because of kidney stones. My mom also can't eat meat because of acid reflex.-
ANSWER:
It honestly depends on how often and how severe her stones are. I've suffered from kidney stones off and on for a number of years, and other than a little damage to my right kidney, I'm fine. I also went to school with a guy who got them so severely that he needed a kidney transplant. His were the size of golf balls. No two cases are exactly alike. Just give your mom alot of love and support while she has them. Those are usually highly painful.

QUESTION:
Is it possible to have kidney stones, but not have any evidence of them in a urine sample or an ultrasound?
When I was pregnant, I was hospitalized on two seperate occasions for what I believe to be kidney stones. I strained my urine, but didn't notice passing any. The doctors were only able to give me an ultrasound due to my pregnancy, but they said none were visible. The pain was worse than child birth. I have had one reoccurance since the pregnancy, unfortunately I was overseas at the time and couldn't seek medical attention. I am worried that there is something wrong with me and I am scared to have another reoccurance. The pain is the most intense pain I've ever had in my entire life. Please let me know if you think this could be an enlarged kidney stone or if you know of any other illnesses that would produce this much pain in my lower back, side, and groin.-
ANSWER:
The "gold- standard" for diagnosing a kidney stone in 2006 is a CT scan of the abdomen with contrast.
Ultrasounds may be insensitive ( may miss small stones) and urinalysis may/ or may not demonstrate blood / calcium in the urine (may be microscopic so may need to look under a microscope).it is possible that you could be having Ureterospasm with out a kidney stone.
My suggestion is that after you finish your pregnancy- get evaluated by a urologist at a respectable institution for further testing.
Good luck
